BANGKOK, (TNA) – Central Pattana PCL (CPN) and the Tourism Authority of Thailand allocated a 500-million-baht budget to organize the CentralWorld Bangkok Countdown 2023 that will happen simultaneously with similar events at other shopping malls of the company.

Executives of CPN, 38 branches of Central department stores and the TAT announced the CentralWorld Bangkok Countdown 2023 to be organized at the CentralWorld shopping complex dubbed the “Times Square of Asia” in the heart of Bangkok. Highlights will include world-renowned artist Rain, award-winning Thai artists and 180-degree fireworks. The event was set for 10 days and 10 nights from Dec 21 to Dec 31.

There will also be “Thailand Countdown 2023” events at Central shopping centers in Phuket, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Hat Yai, Ayutthaya and Nakhon Ratchasima to stimulate tourism in both primary and secondary provinces in the country.

Heh, do they mean domestic or international tourists? If the latter, it's awfully short notice. I don't think many would book a flight now. Most have already made their Christmas and NYE plans.

If they mean the former, well, as we saw during that govt subsidized hotel discount thing, in which hoteliers booked up tons of fake guests to rake that in, there really aren't that many cashed up domestic tourists. Especially considering that other headline, balking at having to pay more than 300 baht a day.

This is really arrogant and very irresponsible. Here they have poverty and people without homes to stay in. Then they waste 500 million on something as easy as cheering the New Year in. Something we all can do together for free. Put the money in a fund for homeless instead.

Nonsense, it's a commercial business decision promoting those involved (as is everything else that successful commerce does, charitable projects excluded).   Why don't you suggest that Central just closes down the entire business, sells everything and gives all the cash to the homeless, that would make just as much 'sense'.   Do businesses in your own country give their marketing budgets to the poorer members of society and the homeless, and, if they don't, have you contacted them to suggest that they should?

"the CentralWorld shopping complex dubbed the “Times Square of Asia” in the heart of Bangkok"

and what about the actual mall in Sukhumvit which is actually named "Times Square" ??

I seem to recall that the Central World mall used to proudly bear the name "World Trade Center" until shortly after the namesake in New York was attacked.........

"It's their promotional money" - Liverpool Lou.

the TAT has no taxpayer funding???

Clearly the central point of this article was Central's contribution but, yes, of course TAT is taxpayer-funded but once that budget is given to it by the government, it is TAT's money to use for it's sole purpose!  Your thinking is that the agency that represents the tourist industry here shouldn't be promoting the one thing that it exists to promote?
