The Royal Thai Police have announced the latest result in the World Cup.

It's their haul in arrests and assets seizures from the near month long event that concluded Sunday in a thrilling triumph for Argentina.

The RTP had set up a special command center led by Gen Torsak Sukhwimon to combat illegal gambling.

Yesterday Thai Rath reported the comments of Torsak's deputy Pol Lt-Gen Phanurat Lakbun.

He said there were 12,245 gambling related arrests in the period from November 19th till Sunday.

Cash, houses with land, luxury vehicles and watches were seized to the tune of 1.7 billion baht.

The Thais were thought to have bet around 11 billion baht on the 64 matches.

"Cash, houses with land, luxury vehicles and watches were seized to the tune of 1.7 billion baht.".......that Thais gamble is unimportant....seizing lots of goodies is the prime aim!

So which of those in the photo owns the bunting shop........

Please explain to me how they catch people betting?? Bookies?

I'd bet Brits gambled a lot more than Thais.

I read somewhere that Australians are the biggest gamblers in the world.

Prohibition works just about as well as it did for alcohol in the US.

Better to look at legalisation, with appropriate safeguards, taxation on profits and assistance for those who have developed a habit. Same as the model for cannabis.

I bet they aren't

Over 12000 arrests? I doubt that very much

Gambling is only illegal if not organized by the government i guess.

Back to betting on the ponies...

yeah, they have specially assigned deity for exact purpose )

Meanwhile went to pawnshop at Huay Kwang intersection - so many desperate for cash to bet.

Totally confused at first by the headline for the link to the article ("...flutter..."). But have now learned still another quaint Briticism courtesy the Asean Now news writers:

The headline made it seem like people were arrested in their houses for gambling. That doesn't seem to be the case.

Man it would be nice to get some real journalists for this website. Ones who can at least write a headline, lol

That gambling will fuel next year's spate of gambling debt executions and beatings as I am sure that many will have borrowed money that they can't repay, hoping for a magic win.

What a pointless waste of time and money by the police. Meanwhile very few are wearing helmets, but nothing is done about that. Priorities really skewed.

Is gambling on the World Cup so dangerous that they should wear helmets??

Just another example of a very misguided bunch of goons, not making the nation safer. And what is up with the ridiculous purple ribbons? Do they even get how silly it all looks?
