National — Cannabis cannot be used as part of New Year celebrations, warned the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine (DTAM).

DTAM director-general Thongchai Lertwilairattanapong said yesterday, December 20th, that cannabis parties during New Year festivals are not allowed and that they will dispatch their staff to inspect any venues that are reported to be organizing such parties immediately. Thongchai reminded the public that cannabis should only be for medical use with the aid of a doctor and not used for parties or events.

Thongchai said vendors must be granted a permit to sell cannabis. If they fail to do so or throw cannabis parties, legal consequences will surely follow.

When reporters asked him if authorities will be inspecting suspicious parties that may be associated with cannabis, Thongchai responded police will be tied up with monitoring other New Year activities such as drinking that will increase the risk of road accidents.

Seems like a bit of a self-important nitwit. It's extraordinary how a select group of Thai professionals and doctors have access to data on this plant that has eluded the rest of the planet for decades. Maybe they should put their super-powers to better use, sorting out corruption, saving lives on the roads and so on.

So if the police will be monitoring other New Years activities  I guess it will be " party on " as normal ?

I've been smoking since the 80's and I have never heard of a cannabis party in my entire life!
And why would anyone want to promote more alcohol consumption on NYE anyways?  That's what will happen if less cannabis is around.
What fools!!

Nobody has. This is classic 1930s level Reefer Madness paranoia from clowns who really have no idea what's going on. Festering behind their desks, letting their limited imaginations get the better of them.

So why are there cannabis shops on almost every corner in some areas, when a pharmacy surely would have been able to dispense this medicine?

Yabba should be the target not this harmless natural weed

While the mantra elsewhere is "Drink/drugs and driving don’t mix",the mantra proven here is "Thais and driving don’t mix" . Notwithstanding any exacerbation by the former additives!

So basically they will be watching the roads lol, Party On

And as if to prove my point I now just discovered the article about a bus crash while drivers tried to swap without stopping the bus ! ????‍♂️. The next one will have to feature IQs !

Huh?

This is not an accurate assessment of the legal status of cannabis use. Recreational use is NOT illegal. Yes, there are limitations on recreational use.

Sending mixed-messages does more harm.

Ho, ho, ho

So the Muppets are going to go to every village and sniff out Anutins ganja brigade, what a complete joke.

The BiB will be too busy talking to their Mia nois to leave the station...

Bless his little heart…. Translation available in Southern US…

Not sure we should take this obscure departments view into consideration. The Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine. Please tell me they don't have a say in cannabis laws or any laws for that matter.

Anutins baby being used in every other way possible except for medicinal purposes which was supposed to be it's intended use.. jumped on by the Thai public as a way of an earner...

complete madness and free-for-all.

Some decent stuff lately, how about you?
Wasn't Thailand STILL in the pandemic last year? With ridiculous quarantines upon visiting?

A "Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine" has powers of arrest / search, etc.? ????

Yes, at some point they were requiring people to stay in these quarantine hotels.... I did not think it ridiculous. I welcomed the idea, people needed to get back to their homes and families, and this was a way that could happen, without infecting the country for those already living here... of which I was one.
