The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) has set up two panels, one to investigate the cause of the sinking of HTMS Sukhothai and the second to assess the search and rescue operations and the ship abandonment process, Admiral Pokkrong Monthatphalin, the RTN Spokesman said today (Monday).

Searches continue for the eighth consecutive day today.

Admiral Pokkrong said that the body washed ashore in Sathing Phra district of Songkhla province yesterday was not a missing crew member, but a Thai trawler crew member who was reported to have drowned on December 18th, the same day that the HTMS Sukhothai sank off Bang Saphan district of Prachuap Khiri Khan.

Surely there should be three teams, then they can go with a majority verdict :whistling:

I would be willing to bet: -

  • Poor maintenance, only 1 of 3 diesels working.
  • Poor seamanship, not buttoned up in bad weather (it wasn't even that bumpy).
  • Both of the above.
  • Skipper had the wrong amulet (maybe I shouldn't be giving them ideas) :whistling:

I had some mates in the RN who sailed a much smaller "Tupperware" (at the time the largest glassfibre ship ever built) class minehunter (HMS Ledbury, M30) down to the Falklands to clean up after the Argies ran away. Their biggest problem was that their baby Bofors gun was removed so that they could put the RAS (Replenishment at Sea) point on.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

so they are investigating themselves. Likely they won't be impartial.

What about ministry of defence and later even the parliament defence commission to check how those teams were working.

The navy botched rescue operation, just finding 4 alive, many dead bodies and many still missing.

The third team will be formed to cover up the evidence found by the first and second team.

I helped to build her, She was launched in 1979.

Did Captain Somchai leave a deck light open; was he told to leave the decklight open or was one of the three not-yet-delivered-submarines on a test run? Were there orders from higher up? We shall never get to the bottom (pun intended) of this case .......
