Thailand's Navy chief has instructed a panel to be set up to investigate the cause of the sinking of HTMS Sukhothai, including maintenance and ships operational circumstances. The panel will also look at what happened when the ship was abandoned and the efforts to save the crew.


19 sailors are believed to have perished and 10 are still missing.

 

Prosecutors say they will press charges for money laundering  against the suspected Chinese crime boss known as  "Tuhao" within the next few days. 


Police believe he was involved with a criminal syndicate that was involved in the drug trade. He is being held in Bangkok remand prison.


Charges will also be brought against 10 other suspects connected with the syndicate.

 

Local authorities in Bangkok have set a deadline of April for the MRTA contractors of the orange pink and yellow train lines to repair the roads around construction sites..


The work will involve laying of pipes, removing barriers, resurfacing and restoring pavements and signage.

 

Claims that a public school teacher who teaches social studies, religion and culture told students that the former Privy Council president and prime minister Prem Tin-sula-nonda was a dictator will be investigated by the minister of education.


The teacher gave her presentation which showed examples of authoritarian leaders that included former Ugandan president Idi Amin, Gen Prayut and Gen Prem. 


The teacher has now been transferred but gave a statement to say her class materials were based on the curriculum of the Education Ministry, and she had no intention of encouraging hatred towards political figures.

 

Yesterday Boxing day marked the 18th anniversary of the 2004 tsunami that smashed into southern Thailand.


At least 5, 000 people were believed to have been killed along the coastline from Phuket to the north of Pagn na, and around 250 thousand died around the region. 


Since then, religious ceremonies have been held annually, and a memorial wall shows the names of victims from 35 countries.

Flights and train services were cancelled, but have mostly resumed.
