Revered "sleeping" abbot set to be cremated two years after death - 50,000 faithful turn up

Daily News reported that around 50,000 people turned up at the first day of funeral rites for a revered northen Thai monk.

 

The ceremony was for the former abbot of Wat Phraphutthabat Huay Tom in Na Sai sub-district of Lamphun.

 

Funeral rites for the monk who died two years ago are taking place at the temple.

Since he died the abbot known as Khru Ba Jao Phan had been stored in a glass case.

 

He showed little sign of decomposition with the media saying he "looked like someone sleeping".

He had his saffron robes changed and was put in a coffin for the cremation that will take place on 19th January.

 

300 novice monks led the traditional thrice perambulation of the chapel.

The faithful cast flowers afore the coffin. 

 

An abbot from Chiang Mai came in to officiate at the ceremony.
