Thailand’s Space Age in the Making

The country is committing significant amounts of resources toward becoming the space hub of Southeast Asia. Is it worth it?

By Tita Sanglee

2023 is going to be a year marked by increased competition between states, big and small alike, to advance “territorial claims” in outer space.

Japan, for instance, is taking the lead to redefine space operations, which have been traditionally dominated by state enterprises, by allowing private space entities to extract and sell space resources. Meanwhile, China has publicized a vision to become a “fully comprehensive space power” with independent capabilities to develop space infrastructure and a governance system by 2045. This bold yet achievable goal, cemented by the successful completion of the Tiangong space station – completely constructed and operated by China, as opposed to the shared International Space Station – has set off alarm bells in the United States and will no doubt serve as a catalyst for NASA’s Artemis program to build a permanent human presence on the Moon and potentially Mars.

Sending people to the Moon is, at this point, obviously unthinkable for middle-sized countries with limited resources like Thailand. Recent developments nonetheless suggest that Thailand is on track to build a comprehensive space strategy and has a role to play in the space domain.

In mid-December, amid the excitement and anxiety of Thailand’s approaching general election, the Thai cabinet gave a nod to the 15-year (2023-2037) national space master plan and the drafting of the national communication satellite policy.

Much better to get the simple things sorted first , like electric supply that does not go

off everytime it rains or the wind blows, increasing the water pressure ,I think I can

pizz harder than its coming out our taps, and the water company is only 4 Klms a

way, it used to be good ,but they have built so many houses ,condo's ,and shophouses

in the area , but have not increased the supply to match.

What are they going to do up there anyway, ?

What about 'Investing' in the hundreds of things that need doing already instead of dreaming about being Spacemen ?

Seems to me that most of those running this Country are already living in a Parallel Universe and are totally oblivious to the needs of the Country and its People !

Are you really sure about that?  Below is a picture of Elon's economy class launch system which he has purchased from the Bun Bang Fai (rocket festival).

The country with notoriously bad infrastructure wants to conquer outer space! And it isn't even April Fool's Day yet...

Could these Chinese rockets go through the airspace? ????

When we lived in Thailand one of the first things I had to purchase for my sanity was a generator. The same power box a hundred meters from our house would blow when it rained or I think anyone dared look at it (almost weekly). Best purchase ever. Family would ask 'how much' but after 8 years we were the only lights on in the village, only tv etc, an island of light in the darkness.

If I take a flight on a Thai spaceship and we orbit the Earth and land back in Thailand, no re-entry permit would be required, right?

I wonder if small branches and twigs will be used to mark potholes in the Moon's surface??

You're traveling through another dimension -- a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's a signpost up ahead: your next stop: the Twilight Zone!

Some of us are hoping and praying he finally moves there and stops his nonsense tweets.

Forgive me for being skeptical. Most Thais seem to be challenged on the highways. Imagine in space? Maybe they can be encouraged to send Prayuth, Prawit, and Anutin into space, where they belong.
