UN chief fears world 'sleepwalking into wider war' - as North Korea steps up preparedness

The UN secretary-general has warned the world could be facing further conflict - as North Korea steps up its preparedness.

As the first anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine approaches, Antonio Guterres said he fears the world is "sleepwalking into a wider war" with its "eyes wide open".

He pointed to the war in Ukraine as having undermined global solidarity and trust, and urged all countries to recommit to the UN Charter, which calls for the peaceful settlement of disputes.

In other words, you think opposing the aggressor in a war of choice started by Russia is a bad thing.

It is likely to be Russia's game plan to make it apparent that continued opposition will lead to a terrifying escalation of the conflict with the expectation that this will discourage resistance.

Meanwhile China is watching Russia and the West weakening each other and waiting for its opportunity.  It will not stop at Taiwan.

I am greatly saddened to discover that we live in interesting times.

Not so sure about China that would be akin to killing the golden goose the Chinese aren’t fools I don’t think they want a world in flames

Soooo, Mr Guterres, how come you haven't noticed that there are a lot of wars going on and the UN hasn't been able to do sod all about most of them?

IMO the UN is a failed organisation as was the League of Nations and should be relegated to an organisation of the bits that work, and stop the farce of the general assembly.

Well , hope he is wrong but what with the threat of more war , global warming , natural disasters , covid and economic uncertainty etc , 2023 looks set to be a tough year for a lot of people.

Hopefully , a massive meteor wont strike in lower Petchabun to ruin my hunker down plans.

I think we can safely predict that in the rest of this year there will be war, somewhere on the planet; the climate WILL change, there WILL be natural ( or un natural ) disasters, there WILL be economic uncertainty and a whole lot of etc, and the UN will only be able to wring it's collective hands and bleat at people to be "nice".

unless there is a popular opposition to war, the governments are pushing for war under their military complex industry pressure.

also nationalism, which is created by any international conflict, boosts governmental powers.

It's not a north korea, which is leading armaments and leading to 3ww, but Germany's foreign minister declaring that they are now in war with Russia. The previous 2 world wars started with Germany moving east. German made tanks are moving now.

The next step is the USA-Russia nuclear exchange. Those several small nukes north korea has is nothing to compare with thousands the superpower's have. Just a matter of time, now some 9 seconds to midnight - some in Thailand would survive nuclear winter, but not likely foreigners living here.

The UN haven't prevented balcan/Kosovo war or 2 wars in Iraq. In fact facilitated them, under NATO pressure.

The UN is not doing anything to revert war, even as offering peace negotiations - in fact Vatican and Turkey did offer them.

I have to agree with all that you wrote there.

If all the money and effort put into war was used to build a better world, we'd be living in paradise. How utterly sad is it that we spend so much to kill each other.
