Russia has begun deploying tactical nuclear weapon-armed vessels in the Baltic Sea for the first time in the last 30 years, the Norwegian Intelligence Service said in its annual report.

“The key part of the nuclear potential is on the submarines and surface ships of the Northern Fleet,” the Norwegian intel noted.

The Northern Fleet warships regularly went to sea with nuclear weapons during the Cold War era, but this is the first time the modern Russian Federation has done the same, the report added.

This is beginning to look ominous. I'm beginning to wonder if the UK and other western countries should have stayed out of this. Ukraine has a poor record for corruption, and for the killing of many Russian speakers with Ukrainian citizenship.

Lots of warheads all in one place

do you mean to start a nuclear war?

read this about Dead Hand.

"In a crisis that might mean a first strike from the United States, high-ranking government officials or military commanders could activate the Perimeter. Perimeter would guarantee that the Soviet Union (and now, Russia) could respond even if its entire armed forces were wiped out.

Once switched on, the Perimeter system can launch the entire Russian nuclear arsenal in response to a nuclear attack. It was part of the Cold War doctrine of mutually assured destruction, a means of deterring nuclear attacks by ensuring the side who initiated a first strike also would be annihilated."

Oh I just think Putin is upping the the game a bit trying to make nato nervous still the fact remains more warheads in one place that could be taken out easily with conventional means. Also Russia has never won a naval battle that I’m aware of.Russia is the only country rattling the nuclear saber as they invade murder and loot their neighbor slava Ukraine ???????? remove the invader

do you realise, that russia has some 4000 nuclear warheads?

you take out a boat with 10-20 nuclear missiles in Baltic and have all coastal towns destroyed by a 15m waves, tens of millions will die in tsunami.

There are no winners in nuclear war, all are dead

Not with tactical warheads and that's what would be the first strike that Russia is threatening with this move

You don't seem very informed with that comment. Not only will Russia have many nuclear missiles remaining elsewhere, but as the Russians are aware of the ships being easy targets, they will IMO launch the missiles at the first sign of an attack on them, before the ships can be destroyed. Ergo, an attack on the ships would ensure a nuclear missile launch.

IMO the deployment of the ships is not a threat to use them, but as a deterrent to an attack by the allies.

Whatever anyone's opinion on guilt for the war in Ukraine, the fact is that we are edging ever closer to nuclear winter with every escalation of the war.

If Russia wants to make the US nervous, all they have to do is release balloons from those nuclear-armed ships.
