Four Thai nationals will face charges in a Malaysian court on Friday over the 2015 discovery of mass graves and suspected human trafficking camps at the country’s border with Thailand, Malaysia‘s home affairs minister said.

 

The dense forests of southern Thailand and northern Malaysia have been a major stop-off point for smugglers bringing people to Southeast Asia by boat – most of them Rohingya Muslims fleeing persecution in Myanmar and squalid refugee camps in Bangladesh.

 

The discovery of camps and graves on the Thai side of the border in 2015 led authorities in Thailand to crack down on people smugglers, but prompted traffickers to abandon at sea thousands of migrants making their way to the border area in overcrowded boats.

I’m 2017 Thailand charged 102 people, including 21 government officials in this case. 
The highest-profile defendant was Lt Gen Manus Kongpan who was sentenced along with another senior figure, Patchuban Angchotipan, a wealthy businessperson and former provincial official known as Ko Tor or “Big Brother Tor”. 
Maj Gen Paween Pongsirin was appointed to lead the investigation. He fled Thailand and sought asylum in Australia. He told Authorities in Australia that high profile figures in the Thai government, military and police are implicated in trafficking and want him killed.

He also told Guardian Australia and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that “from the beginning” he was under pressure not to pursue the perpetrators too enthusiastically.

A Thai general was among 62 people convicted by a court on Wednesday of various charges, including murder, torture, rape, money laundering and human trafficking. 

Lieutenant General Manas Kongpan received 27 years for human trafficking and other offenses.

The 103 defendants, all of whom pleaded not guilty, included Thai police officials, businessmen, bureaucrats and Myanmar nationals.

Thai officials initiated the case in 2015 after the discovery of more than 30 bodies at an abandoned human trafficking camp in the southern Songkhla province close to the Thai-Malaysian border.

A good documentary and he seems a very humble man of good character. Life ruined by thai elite civil servants (police, military, government).

It's worth noting that Prayuth was saying the human smuggling and murders were all being done by civilians and the RTP before the arrest of LtGen Manos.  He was also making a lot of big promises about reforming the RTP, though I'm not sure anyone believed him.

 

Regardless, the RTP struck back by showing how deep the Army was in the mess.  Talk of reforming the RTP went quiet after that; the RTP had reminded the Army that it was as corrupt as the RTP and the RTP could prove it.

An it scum like that that been running the country for the last decade, tell everyone they can be trusted to know what's best for the country!

Thank you. Now, we are getting to the heart of the matter. How many top army, immigration, and other officials have been arrested and jailed? I have not heard anything about those cases. As usual, they are picking on the little guy, and trying to make an example our of him, in a futile attempt to look like they are doing SOMETHING. No doubt the extremely toxic Thai army, and other govt. officials are involved in this trade. Any who are involved deserve nothing short of the death penalty, or some form of execution.
