To protect consumers, Thailand’s Internal Trade Department has launched a nationwide check on the accuracy of vendor weighing machines.

Pol Sub-Lt Chakra Yodmanee, deputy director-general of the department, said today (Tuesday) that officials from the department seized 90 substandard sets of scales between June 1st and 24th and fined the vendors for cheating their customers.

He said that the officials will check the scales used by wholesalers, retailers and vendors to weigh fruit, particularly in southern provinces, where durian and mangosteen are now being harvested, as well as longan in northern provinces.

The OP photo shows a digital scale, but most market vendors I have ever seen use the old spring type, usually going up to 20kg, but only weighing out up to 1 kg.

Word goes around Thailand like wildfire, "Hey guys, they tipped us off! Good thing we paid that advance warning  insurance."

In our local fresh market there are some very old and tatty scales in use. I would doubt their accuracy but the traders generally add a wee bit extra to be sure.

They take them to the same workshops that 'fix' the taxi meters!
