Trump accused of asking staffer to delete camera footage in Florida classified documents case

Former President Donald Trump faced new charges Thursday in a case accusing him of illegally possessing classified documents, with prosecutors alleging that he asked a staffer to delete camera footage at his Florida estate in an effort to obstruct a federal investigation into the records.

The indictment includes new counts of obstruction and willful retention of national defense information, adding fresh detail to an indictment issued last month against Trump and a close aide. The additional charges came as a surprise at a time of escalating anticipation of a possible additional indictment in Washington over his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The updated allegations make clear the vast — and unknown — scope of legal exposure faced by Trump as he seeks to reclaim the White House in 2024 while fending off criminal cases in multiple cities.

The new allegations from special counsel Jack Smith center on surveillance footage at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, evidence that has long been vital to the case. Trump is alleged to have asked for the footage to be deleted after FBI and Justice Department investigators visited in June 2022 to collect classified documents he took with him after leaving the White House. The new indictment also charges him with illegally holding onto a document he's alleged to have shown off to visitors in New Jersey.

But trump is not afraid, and appreciates his opportunity to prove his innocence in a court of law.

Did he say "I did it because that camera makes me look fat!" ?

Hey, I'm just asking.

Ironclad evidence of criminal intent: Trump knew what he had already done was obstruction of justice: why else would he scramble to destroy evidence of box hiding & lying to his own lawyers? Like Nixon, the coverup will get him even if original crime may not

Awareness of guilt, very damning from a legal standpoint.

His cult followers don't care though.

Surprise surprise !!!

It'll be interesting and perhaps even fun to watch the video footage being shown in open court with the huge blank periods for all to see.

I loved the eye-witness Trump staff testimonies of Trump hoarding his boxes like Gollum with his 'precious' and obsessively asking, instructing, demanding and checking as the whereabouts of '"my boxes" which he carried about with him from Bedminster, to Washington, to Florida, backwards and forwards.

Nutter alert! ????????????????

Imagine being a person from that culture and having to acknowledge you come from the same society as that total nutter?! ????????????????????????

I must have missed the anti-biden story of his son's legal team ringing up and pretending to be the other side, which led to a judge throwing an agreement out pending answers on 'total immunity for his son's past deeds under investigation' . Pleading not guilty to no charges with a small slap on the wrist under Daddy;s DOJ, total joke. Total scandal and totally missed again by this one sided media. Biggest story in America and nada on here , just anti trump rhetoric.

Go on, prove me wrong

this plus the post before mine.

@thaipo7, anything on the topic?

All this trouble. And not good trouble. I find it almost hard to believe the Trump keeps digging in the hole he is in. Likely to get worse when the probable next indictments about Jan 6 and attempted election interference drops.

It appears the IT person wasn't all that capable of "erasing the tape."

DOJ says it has the full video, likely because a security tape for an exclusive resort inhabited by an ex-POTUS, the video would have been sent to an electronic "cloud" (ala Khashoggi phone recording went to Apple Watch) that would protect recordings from damage by fire, electrical surge, etc.

As part of discovery, the full recording should be provided to Trump's defense attorney.

At this point, ya GOTTA ask "Just WHAT will it take to make his cult wake the hell up?!?"

This isn't a joke, this multiple-time loser puts the nation at risk, and he's what Republicans WANT?

Teflon is easily ruined with Brillo pads . . .  :whistling:

Just like on the cop & lawyer television shows in the US, when something is off with the surveillance footage you know something is indeed off
