It's the precise opposite of most places I have been, where chatting to an IO gets you in jail. That's why it took me so long to cotton on. They are conversing and they expect some reply, not just 'yes' or 'no'. Same goes for NZ, by the way, in my experience. OK. Chatty is good. I will recall that next trip. Just hope the guy I get isn't a tad gay and follows me home.????????

mfd101
In 2013 I took my Thai Khmer b/f (40 years younger than me) to Oz for the first time. My recollection it was a short-term tourist visa (around 3 weeks). Landed in Melbourne direct from BKK. I noticed the sign for 'Australians, New Zealanders & family' and thought Well let's give it a go. The lady behind the desk couldn't have been nicer. Big smile and, after checking her computer, she smiled at Mike and said: Welcome to Australia. Took all of 30 seconds.
