If you are not sure go ahead and do by yourself - it is not hard and costs about the same. There have been times when visas were only issued if you personally appeared but those days a few and far between.

The have no connects to Consulate - they provide an inexpensive service and help you fill in the blanks if you have problems filling out a visa form and put it together for Consulate hand-in. If they or you hand in makes no difference in visa issue. They might know if fast "overtime" service was available from knowing the officers on duty but that would not be part of there normal service or price.

But if your normal 4 star hotel garb is Speedo and tan use of an agent might be a good idea.

Like Lop already said, and from what I can gather from all the info on here, there's absolutely nothing to suggest they have any 'special relationship' with the Consulate. It's just convienience. You're not going to receive any special treatment if you use an agent.
