Supreme Court asked to probe convicted Thaksin’s privileges

Former Democrat MP for Nakhon Nayok Charnchai Isarasenarak and activist lawyer, Nititorn Lamlua, plan to submit a petition this afternoon to the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Political Office Holders seeking a probe into the enforcement of the verdict against former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Thaksin returned to Thailand on August 22nd to serve his 8-year prison term on three convictions.  His term was, however, reduced to one year by a Royal commutation. The former prime minister has not, however, been incarcerated in a prison for even a single day, but was transferred to a prison hospital and then to the Police General Hospital, citing several ailments which require special medical treatment.

Democrat spokesman Ramet Rattanachaweng, meanwhile, claimed that the government’s most outstanding achievement during its 90 days in office is its ability to turn Thailand’s justice system into a farce, in order to serve the interests of the Shinawatra family.

He said there are many unanswered questions over why the former prime minister has been treated on the 14th floor of the Police General Hospital, such as what illnesses he is suffering and the new Corrections Department’s regulation allowing certain convicts to spend their time outside a prison.

The Democrat said the privileges granted to Thaksin reinforces the popular axiom that Thai prison is for poor people only.

Become?

Same as it ever was.

The probe will be done with a very soggy, single rolled sheet of toilet paper I’m sure. Probably not even 2 ply.
The sort of thorough investigation anyone in a position of influence gets. I bet he’s trembling in his boots.

I hadn't realised until now that Thailand had a Christmas pantomime season. Not much of a plot though. We've seen it all before. Oh no you haven't. Oh yes I have.

Thailand is losing it's ' face ' and credibility over Thaksin's treatment .

A lot of things here that could be done better ... MFP and Pita gave hope that this would happen , but Thaksin and his clan prevented it . Pit's shareholding was no crime that justified his removal . What Thaksin did , and was sentenced for to 8 years in prison , was one .

Selling his telecom business and evading to pay taxes for this in Thailand shows that he is not the philantrophist he likes to be seen as ...

Premature headline. The papers have not gone to the court yet. Thaksin will be sitting at home in his slippers before they decide

He's just got to make it two more days, then he's free.

22 Dec - 22 Feb in home confinement, most suspect he; 's already there.

Then free and clear as of 23 Feb 2024, having served half his one-year (reduced from eight years by the Royal Command) sentence.

That was a lot easier than any could have imagined.

The quote from the OP is sadly very sobering, but true!

"The Democrat said the privileges granted to Thaksin reinforces the popular axiom that Thai prison is for poor people only. "

A Supreme Court that ruled Gen. Prayut's 2014 military coup and national directives issued through absolute power was legal?

Power has a allure all of its own, always and everywhere. It has a special quality in Thailand, open, transparent, without shame, it has an amoral endearing charm about it.

'Supreme Court asked to probe convicted Thaksin’s privileges' - well you can ask but I doubt any response from the Non-Justice Department.

This is not a real response to unlawfulness, it's Act 3.

The previous military inspired government did their very best to manipulate Thailaws to convict anyone who were opposed to them. Thatbis how they stayed i power.

Supreme Court surely already on "Toxins" payroll. He may be a corrupt politician, con-man and criminal...but he ain't stupid.

Absolutely agree 100% Thai prisons are for poor people only if you have lots of money the system plays to your advantage however I believe that the case will be thrown out once higher authority makes a few phone calls
