Thailand has pledged a whopping 40% cut in carbon emissions, up from its initial 30%, following the resounding success of the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai.

 

At a riveting COP28 debriefing event yesterday, December 20, Phirun Saiyasitpanich, Chief of the Department of Climate Change and Environment, declared that a serious study based on social, environmental, and economic impacts is needed. This strategic shift is embodied in the second version of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), Thailand’s dynamic climate action plan.

 

Under the first NDC (2021 to 2030), Thailand had set its sights on a 30% reduction in carbon emissions. However, the stakes have been raised as the nation now gears up to cut emissions by an ambitious 40% in the revamped NDC, set to be unveiled next year.

Phirun outlined Thailand’s unwavering commitment to a sustainable future.

“We will continue our vigorous efforts towards carbon neutrality by 2050 and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065.”

Highlighting the pivotal role of foreign financial support, he emphasised that Thailand can achieve more with international backing. The revelation of Thailand’s first-ever climate change bill, slated for parliamentary review in the first quarter of next year, aims to expedite the nation’s journey towards carbon neutrality through innovative measures like carbon pricing.

look this is just not going to happen. the chances of this happening are about the same as me quitting cannabis by 2030. 

 

 

And this coming from a country that doesn't even have bins on it's streets? 

Thailand promises a lot but in the reality nothing will happen. Mr Prayuth promised equality law on Gaypride but after 2 years nothing happened. Yesterday the same.. Parliament accepted 4 bills but they have to be reviewed and vote again and than to the Senate and a Royal endorsement, so probably not for this year to happen.. Same for a new charter.. Difficult to change, but when there is acoup by the army they can write a new one with no problems, but now they promised to change the existing one and it seems legally impossible... What happened when they promised on a crackdown on blacksmoke cars?? drive around and see how many still pollute the air.. promises in Thailand are worthless

The easiest lowest hanging fruit thing that can be done to at least give the perception that they are taking steps to reduce pollution is to roll out electric passenger buses in Bangkok and then to other cities. Get rid of all those old crazy polluting buses that everybody see with huge plumes of smoke coming out. They are horrendous. This was one of the first thing China done in its drive to EVs and showed they were making an effort and while they are not necessarily reducing pollution they are getting it away from the densely populated areas which has direct impacts on peoples health.

We saw their efforts of cutting Carbon emissions   earlier this week in Pattaya , Cleaners  Hosing down the footpaths,  .

He can promise what he likes, by 2050 he will have retired.

Tomorrow, an edict banning the use of charcoal fuelled cooking devices throughout the Kingdom.?

2030 is a long way away and the today's promisers will be history by then.

Yes, But they do have the Big Blue Bin, that runs down one side of Thailand.

They use that a lot.

Never mind advancing the wealth of the nation through a higher GDP per capita. Easier to snag more foreign direct investments with no promises in return.

Yes they do, they are buried under all that trash. 

Politicians will promise that so they can enjoy the Nut Zero social circuit: private jets to posh destinations, lobster dinners with dignitaries, and all that.

 

Nothing will change.

Thai's throw trash wherever it lands, look at the side of roads, empty lots, etc......they care as much for the environment as they do for safety, which is not at all.

Seen it pour out of windows when a vehicle stops by the roadside, and have passed many a construction vehicle fly tipping by the side of the road when I drive home (Railway bypass in Pattaya). Another thing their education system fails to teach. 

Ban all those horrible smokey tuk-tuks and sawngthaews in Chiang Mai and Bangkok and they'll easily reach that target.
