Hello,

I am a 24 year old American Passport holder wishing to travel to Pattaya in Feb 07. I would like to stay longer than the 30 days allowed by the Visa Exemption. I plan on staying for 6 months min. to 1 year. I would like to be able to open a banking account and rent/lease a house.

Is it easier to apply for a tourist visa/multi-entry on arrival in Thailand or in the U.S?

If I don't apply for a visa what will my options be once in Thailand?

I have thought about signing up for a Thai Language Course which will guarantee me a 1 year student visa.

Thanks for the help.

Once you make up your mind, you should apply for a visa in the US.

the reason i no longer apply in us is the expense. embassy doles out only singles and you have to pay for a tracking mailer so the whole disaster costs you about us60. it used to work great and cheap for triples.

the biggest issue you will have to face is arriving at the airport sans visa. if youll be here 6 months id strongly recmmend you arrive with a ticket out. they DO ask and it IS posted now.

ive have read houston best alternative for multi tourist and hear boston possible.

if youre pp is clean of thai stamps, the authorities will be much mor elenient UNLESS all your living/travel end up w/ thai stamps. then youre just another punter after the 5 month.

if you dont mind paying the money, get your single and have a ticket out. from there make a visa run to penang (its worth a look i guess) and that will give you three more months. if you no intention of returning a long time - you can make a visa run to cambodia cheaply but in this day and age - id go to penang.

los angeles is only good for singles, even if you front up in a monkey suit. w.d.c is very prompt at returning your pp.

if thai embassies were smart they would go back to issuing triples from your home country. many good people simply do not want th ecircus of the long stay visa.

bank: that will be up to the bank. try bangkok bank

1 year: dont start off on a bad foot here, get a TR in us

school: no school will help you w/ a visa.

My PP is clean of Thailand. I think I'll just buy a roundtrip ticket and make a visa run after a few weeks there. BTW I found this school www.thaiwalen.com that will help with a student visa. Anyone know if it's credible? Thanks.

It seems to enjoy a decent reputation.

you said you wish to live in pattaya. there are not many good schools here to learn thai that i am aware of.

is this your first time to thailand? why dont you just come here, travel, see if you like it and then apply to school.

i have years ago actually given up on teaching myself thai. at 46 im pretty unwanted and for me there is little reason anymore to learn this language when you can get the boot any time. you are half my age.

you can pick up enough thai just by applying yourself.

your school is in bkk. bkk is a big, polluted city. be sure you really want to live there!

I have been to Pattaya 2 times when I was in the military.

Really I just wanted the Ed Visa for a year so I dont have to worry about running all the time. Learning Thai was just an added bonus. Not too excited about going to BKK every week either.
