Thyroid biopsy

Hi,

I need to have a biopsy done (cyst in one of the thyroid lobes). Does anyone have a recommendation for a place that does this in Bangkok (or Chiang Mai), how fast can an appointment be made and what is the total cost?

I had one done last November at Sriphat hospital, part of Suan Dok/Maharaj, Chiang Mai, same day/walk in, about 2,800. Any endocrinologist at Sriphat can arrange.

 

But any large hospital should be able to do it, I had one done at Bumrungrad many years ago, it's called an FNA (fine needle aspiration).

 

BTW it's totally painless and only takes a couple of minutes.

As above. Endocrinologist at any hospital can do this and it is a simple office procedure. 

 

However if it is clear from ultrasound that the mass is a cyst biopsy is usually not indicated. 

 

There are very clear criteria for when a thyroid mass should be biopsied.  Check your ultrasound report it should give a classification for the mass e.g. cystic and benign, low suspicion, intermediate suspicion etc. What does it say? 

 

(I am assuming you had an ultrasound since that is only way you could know it is a cyst).

My family doctor reviewed the ultrasound and recommended that I get a biopsy within the next few weeks. Since I don't have enough time to do it in my country, I’ve decided to have it done in Thailand, as I’ll be arriving there in a couple of days. Thanks again to you both; I really appreciate the help

Bring the ultrasound report with you.

 

If it actually says "cyst", specialist might feel biopsy not needed.  And in any event, needs the ultrasound report to know where to aspirate.
