French authorities have uncovered a chilling Iranian plot to target Jewish individuals in Europe, marking a resurgence of state-sponsored terrorism orchestrated by Iran's secret services. This alarming development was revealed on Thursday by the French news website Mediapart, and later confirmed by a report from France's General Directorate for Internal Security (DGSI), which was seen by Agence France-Presse.

The case, referred to as "Marco Polo," came to light after a Paris court in May detained and charged a couple, Abdelkrim S., 34, and his partner Sabrina B., 33, with conspiring with a criminal terrorist organization. Both suspects are currently in pretrial detention, facing serious accusations of involvement in Iranian plots aimed at killing Jews in Germany and France.

According to the DGSI report, Iranian secret services have revived their policy of targeted killings since 2015, with the situation worsening in the context of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. The objective of these operations appears to be the targeting of civilians, particularly those within the Jewish and Israeli communities, as well as sowing fear among political opposition groups in Europe.

Iran is accused of recruiting criminals, including drug lords, to carry out these operations on their behalf. Abdelkrim S., who had previously served a 10-year prison sentence for a killing in Marseille and was released on probation in July 2023, is alleged to be the main operative in France for an Iranian-sponsored terrorist cell. This cell reportedly planned violent acts in both France and Germany.

Investigators believe that a former fellow inmate introduced Abdelkrim S. to the cell's coordinator, a major drug trafficker from the Lyon area who is suspected of visiting Iran in May. The group's targets included a former employee of an Israeli security firm and three of his colleagues residing in the Paris suburbs, as well as three Israeli-German citizens living in Munich and Berlin.

Despite being on probation, Abdelkrim S. is believed to have made multiple trips to Germany, including visits to Berlin with his wife, under the guise of scouting locations for the planned attacks. However, he has denied these accusations, claiming that his travels were merely for personal shopping purposes.

French authorities also suspect the cell of plotting to set fire to four Israeli-owned companies in southern France between late December 2023 and early January 2024. Abdelkrim S. has rejected these claims, asserting that he only acted as a go-between on Telegram for the mastermind and other individuals involved in what he describes as a planned insurance scam.

This case underscores the ongoing threat of Iranian state-sponsored terrorism in Europe, raising concerns about the safety of Jewish communities and political dissidents across the continent. The French government remains vigilant in its efforts to thwart such plots and protect those at risk from these dangerous schemes.
