Flooding on Highway 118 (Chiang Mai - Chiang Rai Highway)

Featured Replies

The Highway is flooded again in two areas in the Wiang Pa Pao Valley - both near the Town of Pa Ngio.  One lane is open at the first spot (about 1 km NE of the Town); intermittently closed/one lane a bit closer to Wiang Pa Pao.

The Pa Ngio reservoir has overflowed it banks taking a part of the walls of the reservoir with it.

I’ve driven through floods there twice before. It’s fairly common there.

Besides the flooding in certain areas, I was told that there is also long-term construction again in other areas,

Can anybody share their observations of the construction segment (location, length, quality, etc) of Rt 118 between CM & CR.

Thanks

Highway 118 is being completely rebuilt from Mae Lao corner (intersection with Highway 1) to Wiang Pa Pao (in small sections).  Current areas with major construction underway:

Mae Lao Corner (118 and 1) west to Phu Doi (the old earthquake area)

- sort-of passible except after heavy rain.  Mostly 2 lanes with at least one courtesy area (discourtesy location) where the road is very narrow where vans and delivery pickups seem to own the road.

NE of Pong Phu Fuang to just east of Suan Charin Resort-mostly one lane with flag person.

- VERY poor condition (road is mostly mud)

There are also other smaller sections where there is work, with minor delays expected but the road surface is mostly ok.  Note that this was over a week ago – the areas with problems seem to change daily.  Give yourself lots of extra time.  The very recent flooding in some areas around Wiang Pa Pao has added additional misery to the trip.  Expect additional delays.

There is also some construction near Mae Khachan where an intersection if being rebuilt.  Traffic there seems to be flowing ok but slow.
