Before Israel’s ground offensive in Lebanon began this week, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had already executed over 70 clandestine operations north of the border over the past year. These covert raids were largely kept under wraps, with no Israeli soldiers reported as casualties. According to an anonymous Israeli official, these missions took place across hundreds of days and nights, with little public acknowledgment or hint of their occurrence before the recent escalation.

Uncovering a Hezbollah Tunnel Complex

Israel’s ground offensive, which officially commenced on Tuesday, aims to neutralize Hezbollah, a powerful militant group based in Lebanon. The IDF has claimed that Hezbollah was planning an assault similar to the devastating Hamas attack on Israel that took place on October 7. By launching these operations, the IDF sought to dismantle Hezbollah’s infrastructure and prevent such a large-scale attack from materializing.

“Hezbollah had prepared to use those villages — as staging grounds for an October 7-style invasion…into Israeli homes.

Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, an IDF spokesman, revealed that the secret operations, carried out since the war with Hamas began, targeted Hezbollah installations near Israel’s northern border. The aim was to secure the region and allow residents of northern Israel, who had fled due to ongoing rocket fire from Hezbollah, to return to their homes safely. Throughout these raids, Israeli special forces reportedly entered numerous Hezbollah compounds, collecting intelligence, dismantling weaponry, and destroying key infrastructure.

Hagari further stated that Hezbollah’s arsenal included advanced, Iranian-made weapons, highlighting the group's military sophistication and strong backing from Iran. One of the operations involved the destruction of a home that concealed weapons on its ground floor and hid a 500-foot tunnel underneath. This tunnel, along with the house, was obliterated by a combination of ground and airstrikes.

In another operation, the IDF uncovered a network of trenches and tunnels connecting a command center with weapons storage facilities and living quarters for Hezbollah fighters. These hidden military installations point to the level of preparedness Hezbollah had achieved, but Israel's raids significantly disrupted their operations.

Despite the scale of these missions, the Lebanese army appeared unaware of their occurrence, and Hezbollah did not make any public statements regarding the raids. Even the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon did not respond to requests for comment on these covert activities. As Israel continues its offensive, the revelations of this extensive year-long campaign mark a new chapter in the ongoing conflict with Hezbollah in the region.
