Thai woman suffers broken legs in hit-and-run on zebra crossing - video

A Thai woman is seeking justice after a hit-and-run on a zebra crossing in the central province of Pathum Thani on October 1 left her with two broken legs.

The victim, 50 year old Rattana, took to social media to search for the pickup driver who crashed into her at around 5am on October 1. Rattana shared CCTV footage of the incident with the public and urged anyone with useful information to contact her.

In the video, Rattana is seen standing in the middle of a zebra crossing, waiting to cross to the other side. She stood on the road where many vehicles passed by at high speed, as there was no traffic island.

Suddenly, a black pickup truck hit her, causing her to collapse to the ground. The driver did not stop to check on her and did not even slow down.

Channel 7 reported that a motorcycle taxi rider, Sutirat, spotted Rattana lying in the middle of the road and called a rescue team to the scene. Sutirat said he and other taxi riders tried to identify the pickup’s registration number but failed.

Sutirat added that another victim, a 90 year old, was previously hit by a car at the same spot, as most motorists drive at very high speeds on this road.

Rattana was admitted to Pathumvech Hospital. Both her legs were broken, and her left arm was swollen. She shared that she would be unable to walk for many months and could not go to work, resulting in a loss of income. She has two sons to care for and wants the pickup driver to take responsibility for his actions.

According to Rattana, she filed a complaint with officers at Khlong Luang Police Station and hopes the police will bring the pickup driver to justice as soon as possible.

Was she suicidal ???

I know thats a pedestrian crossing and cars 'should' stop... but she seemed to make no effort whatsoever to cross the road with any degree of common sense or safety whatsoever...

Also, the design of the crossing is awful... on a road that wide there surely has to be a 'central island' which protects the pedestrian...

Solution - well lit speed bumps before the crossing...

Thai culture 😢

But don't burp at the table.....heaven forbid.

Absolutely despicable (just watched the video)

She is standing there as they drive past of both sides.

It's painted red, no less, after the famous case of the doctor being killed. How many countries even need them to be painted red??! Probably only Thailand.

Then, she gets hit.

Beneath contempt.

And it isn't just one to two rogue drivers: it's EVERYONE!!

Well, she was clearly being cautious; she didn't just march across.

What more could she have done?

I'm not sure really......   there are many hazardous crossings in Thailand.

Being 'stuck' in the middle is definitely a 'no-no' for me...    waiting for the whole road to be clear is the obvious answer and I've had to do that in the past.

It does surprise me how many people cross the road (without a crossing island) in two goes... i.e. cross to half way, then stop and wait for a gap in the traffic comming from the other direction...  it just seems so lethal...

With regards to being cautious - I'm not sure she was, being 'stuck' in the centre like that her eyes 'should' have been on stalks but it would appear that once she was half way across she was only interested in the traffic coming towards her from the direction she wanted to cross.

Of course, the black pickup is 100% at fault - the driver should never be hitting a 'stationary anything'....   the driver had clearly drifted out of their lane...

But - I think this is a perfect example of 'what not to do when crossing a wide road in Thailand'....

I hope they find the driver and his insurance compensates the lady for her loss of income while she recovers.

The insurance will cover medical or loss of life, nothing else, not the victim's loss of income or their pain n' suffering (medical bill aside)

However, for a "reckless driving causing injury" charge to be settled compensation must be paid (to the victim) for their pain n' suffering as well as a fine (to the police).

But the insurance doesn't pay this.  It comes out the driver's pocket.

If they can't settle it (agree on the figure) in the police station, it goes to court.

However, with a hit n run case, it's likely a lot worse and may go to court anyway cos he/she didn't stop.

Stay off off pedestrian crossings.

Poor lady. It's not just Zebra crossings that are dangerous - at light controlled crossings many Thai drivers just ignore the red lights. The only safe way to cross the road in Thailand is in a tank.

5 AM. In the middle of the speed circuit.. IN THAILAND. 👍

Waiting for the road to be completely clear would be a very long wait.
A road that wide and that busy at 5AM needs a pedestrian crossing controlled by lights.
Yes, I know that would still not guarantee pedestrians' safety, but a step in the right direction.

The only way im leaving the house in thailand is by SUV, train, or airplane

Sounds like a pram would be more appropriate.

Can't really tell from the video but it sort of looks like she was standing there filming the traffic.

That road looks to busy and wide to attempt in one crossing. I think  she did the right thing in the circumstances assuming no other safer place to cross

when will we start to see articles of thai people jumping in front of cars to get money, as they do in some other countries and fake injury...  she just stood there...was it 'green' light?

A box maybe?😉

A pedistrian island need to be built at thet place to protect people, as it is obvious that the drivers

will not slow down, and we all know that a painted cross walk is very dangerous. Too bad that there

was no elevated crossing near that area.

In Thailand (and in most countries of the world) obtain a court order to be paid is fairly east.
Getting the money on the otherhand can be real pain in the a**.

Long ago, at my divorce, my ex-wife was  ordered to pay me a substancial amoust of money.
I never received that money and had to pay my lawyer and court costs on top of that.
I imagine that this would be even easire in Thailand as tehere are no leagal instances to claim your money.

Zebra crossings are no made for Thai drivers.
NEVER USE A ZEBRA CROSSING IN THAILAND!!!!

In most Westen countries, people are learning to use Zebra Crossings and other security devices from Kindergarten where Police or Zebra Crossing officers guard the users in their safety.
And offenders face huge fines.

As long as Thailand don't start to train their citizens the traffic rules, Zebra crossing. Stop lights, and other safety devices are death traps.

Clearly the car was driven by a farang.

The best suggestion to solve this problem I've seen or heard. And preferably speed bumps like we have in my moobahn where you have to drive maximum 25 km/hour in order not to ruin your vehicle's suspension.

ANd there is a proof of last week topic.

Do you need to stop when approaching pedestrian crossing.

Yes you need to slow down and prepare for stopping.

But it is Thailand.

You make it sound like painting them red actually did anything!

Of course it didn't do anything, and I didn't say it did.

I was just pointing out the fact they had to paint them red in the first place.
