Shocked tonight to cash my Australian dollars to get a lousy 21.73 , 2173 baht  $100

Can someone please calculate maybe a mathematical expert how much is 100 baht in AUD please !

Now I have been advised by another visitor in my hotel to go to Vietnam that's where he is moving to

Please how do you Australian expats survive on old age pension here when prices here in Thailand are comparable to Australian prices after the exchange

I paid nearly $6 for a 6 inch subway ,same price in Australia

Gone are the days of buying cheap shoes and clothing here in Thailand

Nearly $5 for a pair of thongs and I don't mean underwear! Please !

The thongs that go on your feet

Is Vietnam cheaper,I still have 3 weeks to go on my work leave , I feel like I should go back to Australia where it's cheaper .what an expensive place

How do you afford to retire you guys who only have a small Government pension ??

  • Maybe blame it on Australian governments whose policies have caused the dollar to drop so low.   with the millions of bigger spending Chinese and Russians here now  I doubt any of the Thais

  • Work more.  Save, invest more.  State pensions were never meant to be one’s sole means of retirement income.   Naturally this reply won’t go over well with the “I want it now “ crowd.

Hence they have a low income retirement.

I agree with your comment about Vietnam but not with your comment about Aussie pension, I live in OZ on just an OAP it all depends where you live. I still pay AUD 240 per week for about 8 years now and still can afford to travel to LOS twice a year.

Can go to Medicare doctors also free

You can live pretty cheap in Vietnam. The only problem is they don't have a retirement visa, so you have to be ok with doing border runs every 3 months.

Cost of living is very low to me in Thailand compared to the West. Just gotta mop more. Mop till you drop. Or go hang out in the Manila subways. I heard it's the most fun anyone can ever have.

Why on earth would you buy/eat that?  Australia is actually the only place I ever bought one, never again, anywhere.  Or maybe  Brisbane just can't get real bread.

Accommodation is the big expense and for longer term tourists such as the likes of you and I - nice accommodation in places like Jomtiem and Koh Chang so much cheaper compared to Bali by what I've seen - and of course Australia.

They don't care, they've got Indians. THB is about 7% stronger than it was a few months ago, some link to the ex PM getting fired

Google is your friend.

Surely you didn't imagine the exchange rate would be favourable to you for ever, did you? Did you not make plans for that eventuality?

You'd have to pay me to go visit Bali. It's full of Aussies.

No your right ...Definitely not !

$5 is $5 and I'm very poor ,that's my hourly rate !

Sundays I get $7 an hour though

And no retirement benefits !

I was thinking a part time job in Boyztown to make up for it ,I have write to my HR department to ask for a reference

I will have to stay in the flybird condo it looks like .

Thailand not for you

If your appearance resembles the typical nearly broke cheap charlie loitering around Pattaya even boyztown will not be successful for you.

Best to stick with the Outback.

Well as there is a lot of people with indian background who work with me ,I'm thinking India

They seem to go there on our $5 hourly rate sometimes twice a year ,!

Yes I have had to change I found 40 baht second hand t shirts at Soi bukhao market

And....I went to a buffet and when they wernt looking I quickly put the food in a container in my bag ,take it home for later !

I have heard the Outback of Australia is more expensive, no I think I will have to start living like an old backpacker ,buses to airport from Pattaya , hostels as rooms ,maybe even someone here will lend me their room

It's the working poor like me who can't afford these prices of inflation.

Many of us in Australia as janitor are working for less than $5 an hour we are the working poor with no retirement benefits,

I will end up an old sex worker with a beer bottle laying outside the Nirun Condo's at 7am in the morning wearing a Chang singlet !!!
