I just attempted to cancel my work permit. Everything I found online suggested I simply go with a form filled out and a letter from the company and it’s an easy process.

However I’ve just been told I can’t do it personally as I am not an owner of the company. I was previously director and shareholder but the DBD has been changed and I am no longer.

The problem is I leave Thailand in 2 days. I know if I don’t get it cancelled and cancel my visa/extension then the company will be fined. It is very unlikely this is going to happen in time.

Is there anything I can do to avoid the fine myself? If I go to immigration without my work permit being cancelled can they still cancel my visa/extension. Then I get the 7 day extension to leave Thailand. Then the owner of the company or a representative can go and cancel my work permit later?

I also understand not cancelling my visa correctly could have negative effects for me trying to get other visas. I plan to apply for a DTV in Vietnam and don’t want this to ruin that.

The letter to cancel your extension sounds great, BUT I think you're way better off cancelling your own work permit (seeing as it's YOUR booklet anyway).
Go cancel the work permit, then take the letter from the company and the receipt that you canceled the work permit to the immigration office. They will cancel your current extension and stamp you in to the date on the letter. Then you've officially canceled everything the correct way and won't have any problem down the road with either the Ministry of Labour or the Thai Immigration Office.
