I have just sold an old motorbike. However it was registered in Songkhla and the guy I sold it to lives in Korat. 
He said all he needed was my signature and copy of passport to transfer the ownership. 
Yesterday, he called to say that I will need to go with him in person to the provincial head office (200km) round trip. 
An incredible waste of time for a second hand bike.
Has anybody encountered this and is there any way round it?
 

There is absolutely no reason  for you to go in person..however he will likely need a "power of attorney" form  "transfer form" and possibly

(some provinces require it) a  certificate of residence  from you.

And I've just found out that Google can translate text in an image. You learn something everyday. Thank you.

 

Unfortunately, I suspect I will be forced to go if the provincial registration office insists on it. As you know, government offices here are a law unto themselves.

Or you can go to any of those places that inspect vehicles for registration renewal, pay a small fee and they'll take care of everything for you.

It's 2000 baht to move the license plate / green book to a different province

That might be the actual cost but the fee the agent takes shouldn't be more than a couple of hundred Baht.

Basically if you make the name transfer within the province the vehicle is registered (makes no difference where the buyer is registered as living) there is no need to change plates. If you makes the name transfer at a different province you have to change plates before you can transfer ownership.

If so it's not your problem, this issue should have been dealt with prior to sale. 

 

What you could do is visit your closest DLT, do the transfer, then the new owner can transfer to his province at his local DLT

The guy who bought the bike has already been to the local office DLT and they said it can only be done at the provincial one.

They also gave us the same information when we inquired about it around six months ago. So you can say what you like but if the local office refuse to do it then, you have no choice.

That would seem to be the norm at least for were I live in Chonburi

to do a transfer of out of province vehicle you have to got the the main transport office  not the sub offices..

Anyway if the buyer has all the required documents (supplied by you)

he/she/they (😋 ) can do the whole process at their local DLT  albeit it may require 2 or more trips to the office but it can be done and there is no need for you to go anywhere.
