In a startling disruption at a Thai restaurant in Prachin Buri, a drunken Chinese tourist turned what was meant to be a tranquil evening of dining and live music into a scene of chaos and offence. On April 30th, the incident rapidly went viral after the popular Facebook page Jay Moi v+ shared footage of the man stripping off his shirt and tossing money at bewildered patrons below.

The spectacle unfolded on the second floor of the restaurant, where the man, clearly intoxicated, began dancing shirtless while coughing phlegm. He then proceeded to shower banknotes over the diners on the ground floor, leaving them both uncomfortable and offended. The unexpected behaviour disrupted an otherwise calm evening for those enjoying dinner and music.

Eyewitnesses recorded the chaos, with videos showing the tourist blithely tossing money over the balcony to the visible discomfort of Thai guests trying to navigate the awkward spectacle below. His actions prompted immediate attention, with police officers soon arriving at the venue to assess and manage the situation.

Upon arrival, officers checked the man’s passport and issued him with a stern warning about his behaviour. Although the tourist initially refused to engage with the police or heed their warnings, officers successfully managed to de-escalate the situation without any further incident.

Criticism from Jay Moi v+ was sharp, condemning the man's actions as a blatant display of disrespect towards Thai people and culture. "Chinese people throw money on the heads of Thai people who are sitting and eating downstairs. Some take off their shirts, and some cough up phlegm all over the place. They don’t know the right time and place," the post remarked, further lamenting the lack of societal manners exhibited by the tourist. "Thai people have dignity."

The page further expanded on this behaviour, sparking wider discussions about perceived leniency towards unruly tourists in Thailand. The post continued, "As someone who travels frequently, I have rarely seen foreigners being aggressive in other people’s countries. The reason is that their laws are strict. Have you ever noticed how many fights foreigners cause in Thailand? How much of a mess our country is because of certain groups of people?"

This incident resonated with thousands of netizens who expressed their anger over the man's behaviour and called for stricter enforcement of Thai laws to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The debacle has reignited an ongoing debate on tourist conduct and Thailand’s approach to handling misbehaving visitors from abroad.

As the clip continues to circulate, it serves as a point of reflection and discussion about maintaining respect and decorum within Thailand's tourism sector. Many argue that while Thailand remains a welcoming destination for international travellers, it's crucial to enforce standards that preserve local dignity and social norms. The event underscores the broader issue of foreign tourists sometimes neglecting the cultural values of the countries they visit, thereby impacting both their experience and those of the local communities.

I could write out a whole list of social norms in Thai culture. Do they really want to play this game ?

Thai hypocrisy is sickening.

One of my favourite quotes from a Thai friend "Chinese tourists make Russian tourists look polite".

Thai people have dignity

Depends how you emphasize that.

Only Thai people have dignity? Or

Thai people have nothing but dignity?

Hmmh.

The first option could be derogative towards others and the second option is it too.

The netizens should be more pissed off at the police force for not doing their jobs, until a complaint. They also should be upset that they get a slap on the hand and a small fine (which the Thais get), when they should make it a point for all foreigners who do unlawful acts to be arrested and deported or at least a big fine for first offense and then deportation if they muck up again on lighter issues. Time to stop blaming the tourists and start blaming you protectors and law makers.

I thought throwing habdfulls of 20 baht notes around was the strict purview of Koraen gentlemen frequenting gogo bars. :coffee1:

Good point. I think what you're saying is that if you're going to show outrage, feel outrage over something that's worthy of your netizen warrior tirades.

Thin skinned snowflake culture gets quite pathetic and sickening after a while.

Thai people knows very well, that such behaviour should always be done in the bathroom sink, with no need to clean up after themselves!

Hahaha.. bringing to public what he usually does in private ..🤣🤣 no wonder it’s offensive 😂

Come on, be fair: Upon arrival, officers checked the man’s passport and issued him with a stern warning about his behaviour

The truth is that it matters not if Chinese, Thai or anyone else

It matters not if they are tourists or residents

It matters not what country one is in

There are high spirits and there are.hooligans and those that disturb the peace with reckless abandon often through drinking too much.

These incidents happen all over the world

Short of serious consequences of such disturbances, offenders should be appropriately dealt with and everybody moves on!

I agree that if a person is a nuisance  then staff talk to them. If police called automatic  should be make them pay bill  and either take them to station if  not cooperative  if cooperative  then take them home and tell them to stay.  If in a hotel have staff call police if he leaves

Drunken stunt, misprint surely.

Maybe TAT should concentrate on attracting quality rather than sheer quantity

Did not bother to seek out the video but I think it's likely that 'antics' should replace 'chaos' and 'amusement' should replace 'outrage' in the headline.  Pity I was not at the restaurant--sounds like it was a fun evening.

Throwing Money?

Throw his wallet and Credit Cards in a basket, Hand it over to a Chinese Airline To Sort Out The Charges.

They also need to put an entry ban in the passports like in the "Old Days" in the EU with people caught working Illegally.

If he wishes to avoid criticism, he should stick with larger bank-notes.

Here in Bangkok I see Thais are exhausted. No more land of smiles. Add to this our never ending static in their lives due to foreigners. The conundrum of course is that they are ever gracious as well.

I'm feeling being made even more distant at times. I dress well, assume Thai manners in public, not unattractive for my age.

I fear we're losing ground. Not a day goes by and something like this happens. Easily 356 farang die in this country annually due to dumb ass shl+

Probably 20 Bhat notes never seen a Chinese throwing money around and I drove tour busses full of them for years, but rude to the max

Op Template For Sure-Fire Responses.

Sheer quantity over quality only works if you are selling $2 items at a swap meet. Most of these tourism officials should be demoted to swap meet salesmen!

Better: not any incoming flights with these idiots in.
