I would have thought that an upward trajectory would have indicated that the firer was in the prone position, which rather indicated to me that thete was a degree of premeditation.

 

My training on small arms bullet performance is perforce limited (I was an Artilleryman and therefore accustomed to larger calibres and longer ranges) however some observation has indicated that a 5.56 mm round "tumbles" on entering the body, meaning a small entry wound and a convoluted path through the body, with a very large exit wound, often not in line with the point of entry; which would make the sort of forensic analysis you describe rather inconclusive.

The use of prone position would be the subject of cross examination at trial , it it ever gets that far. Its an indication of a lot of things.

 

the 55 grain M193 is stabilized with a 1-12 twist. Military rifles were twisted 1-7 to handle 69 grain tracer. The upshot then of shooting 55 grainers in a 1-7 rifle is that the bullet becomes unstable at longer ranges and will tumble when it hits.. At short range (20 feet) it will probably go through most of the torso before it blows out the back. It will still demonstrate a path though.
