Authorities in Krabi are on high alert after two suspicious objects were discovered in separate locations in the provincial capital on the morning of 26 June. Bomb disposal experts (EOD) have been deployed to the scenes to investigate and ensure public safety.

 

The first incident occurred near a well-known public art installation, the Mahad Wood Sculpture located at the entrance to Krabi Town. At approximately 11:30 members of the public reported seeing an unfamiliar object placed at the base of the sculpture. Police arrived promptly and secured the area, while EOD specialists were dispatched to assess the threat.

 

Initial reports confirmed the presence of what appeared to be an explosive device. EOD teams successfully retrieved and neutralised the object, and no injuries or damage were reported. No details have been released yet, to confirm if it was a credible explosive device.

 

Shortly afterwards, authorities received a second alert involving a suspicious motorcycle abandoned in the vicinity of the Krabi Central Mosque, located in the Thai Chang subdistrict of Mueang Krabi District. The motorcycle, parked in an unusual manner, raised immediate concern over the possibility of it being used in a VBIED – Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device.

 

Police quickly cordoned off the area, evacuating nearby buildings and placing the scene under lockdown while awaiting further investigation by bomb disposal experts.

 

A spokesperson from Krabi Provincial Police stated:

 

“We are treating both incidents with the utmost seriousness. The EOD teams are working methodically to assess any potential threat. At this time, we urge the public to avoid the affected areas and remain calm while investigations are ongoing.”

 

These incidents follow recent bomb scares in other parts of southern Thailand, including Phuket earlier the same day, where an EOD unit detonated a suspicious object found near Patong Beach. That discovery came just days after a man from Pattani Province was arrested on suspicion of planting multiple suspicious items across key tourist and public locations.

 

Authorities have not yet confirmed any link between the Krabi incidents and the earlier arrest in Phuket, though investigations are underway.

 

Security has now been tightened across Krabi, particularly at public landmarks, religious sites and transport hubs. Police and military personnel are conducting additional patrols and the public is being urged to report any unusual behaviour or unattended items immediately.

 

Authorities are expected to make an official statement later.

Suspicious Objects Found at 4 Locations in Krabi

Authorities in Krabi province have defused a number of suspected explosive devices discovered in locations throughout Mueang District, with one device reportedly programmed to detonate 145 hours after it was planted.

 

According to local news sources, the discoveries have prompted heightened security measures and widespread concern, particularly due to the strategic placement of the items near tourist and public areas.

 

The four locations where suspicious items were found:

 

1. Mahad Wood Sculpture Park, Utarakit Road, Pak Nam Subdistrict:

 

A device resembling a bomb was found approximately 20 metres from a local police traffic outpost. The object contained a plastic packet of chemical powder and a time-based triggering mechanism. The area was cordoned off, and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) officers safely removed the item.

 

2. Central Mosque of Krabi, Phetkasem Road, Sai Thai Subdistrict:

 

A suspicious blue Honda Wave motorcycle, bearing Bangkok registration 6 กบ 5500, was discovered abandoned by the mosque’s kitchen building. While no explosives were found inside the vehicle, it had reportedly been left there since 24 June, raising concerns over its presence.

 

3. Tent Camping Signpost, Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park:

 

Near the main entrance signpost of the popular national park, a suspected explosive device was found. Though the object had the physical components of a bomb, officials noted that the detonation circuit had not yet been assembled.

 

4. Forest Area 50 Metres from the National Park Signpost:

 

Perhaps the most alarming discovery was made near a tree just 50 metres from the third location. A device believed to be a live explosive was buried and found to have a countdown timer set to trigger detonation in 145 hours, just over six days.

 

Authorities have confirmed that all suspicious objects were safely recovered and are now under forensic investigation. Authorities have not yet confirmed if any of the devices were credible explosive devices, or were simply placed to cause disruption and spread fear.

 

The incidents have raised fears of a coordinated attempt to target public or tourist zones in the province, though no group has claimed responsibility at this stage.

 

Local police and national security agencies are continuing their investigation while increasing patrols and surveillance at potential high-risk locations across Krabi.

 

The situation remains under close watch and residents are urged to report any suspicious objects or activity to authorities immediately.

Security Tightened in Krabi as Authorities Search for Suspicious Devices in Ao Nang

Authorities in Krabi intensified their search for suspicious objects in two locations around the Ao Nang tourist area on 27 June, following confessions from suspects linked to a recent attempted bombing. However, no explosive materials were found during the operations.

 

K-9 units from Border Patrol Police Division 43 in Songkhla, along with explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) teams and local investigative officers, were deployed to sweep the area around an antique locomotive displayed in front of a hotel in Ao Nang subdistrict. This site was identified based on information extracted from suspects who admitted to placing explosive devices there on the night of 23 June.

 

CCTV footage corroborated their claims, showing an individual parking a motorcycle near the location and placing an object suspected to be an explosive. However, after a thorough search using metal detectors and K-9 units, no device was found. Investigators suspect that early morning cleaning crews on 24 June may have unknowingly disposed of the object with the trash. Waste from the area was later transported by the Ao Nang Subdistrict Administrative Organisation to a biowaste-to-energy facility in Sai Thai subdistrict. Officials are now reviewing security camera footage along the transport route to trace the object’s possible whereabouts.

 

In a parallel operation, authorities also scoured the coastal defences near Noppharat Thara Beach, focusing on the area surrounding the well-known “Shellfish Sculpture” installation. The suspects had indicated this as another location where a device had been planted. EOD personnel and local officials searched the rocky seawalls, landscaped areas and over one kilometre of beachfront, but again found nothing.

 

Meanwhile, park rangers from Noppharat Thara–Phi Phi Islands National Park, supported by Krabi Tourist Police, have stepped up patrols at the park’s pine garden area, a key point of departure for tourists taking boat trips to the islands. This follows the discovery of two suspicious packages in the same area the previous day, which were successfully neutralised by bomb disposal experts.

 

Security and administrative officials are maintaining heightened alert levels, carrying out thorough scans and increased patrols across tourist hotspots in the province. The Governor of Krabi and regional security chiefs have since issued a statement confirming the situation is under control.

 

Authorities continue to investigate the broader implications of the case, with an emphasis on ensuring public safety for both local residents and the large number of domestic and international tourists visiting Krabi.

Device Found in Ao Nang Tourist District – Timer set to 120 Days

Authorities have uncovered another suspect device planted in a busy commercial zone near Ao Nang Beach in Krabi.

 

At approximately 14:00 on 27 June, police investigators and a bomb disposal unit (EOD) from Krabi Provincial Police discovered a suspicious object disguised as a rock near the breakwater, adjacent to the iconic Pla Bai sculpture at Ao Nang’s beachfront promenade.

 

Initial inspections suggested the item was an improvised explosive device (IED), similar in design to a bomb previously discovered in Phang Nga province. The area was swiftly cordoned off to protect nearby tourists and locals, as the location is a well-known photography spot and central gathering point.

 

 

Upon further investigation, the EOD team confirmed that the device had a timing mechanism set to activate in 120 days. The device was safely neutralised and removed from the scene for examination. Authorities have yet to confirm if this was a credible explosive device.

 

In a related incident, another suspicious item was discovered around the same time at nearby Noppharat Thara Beach. This second object was located beneath a fig tree, directly opposite the staff quarters of Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park in Moo 3, Ao Nang subdistrict.

 

EOD officers carefully extracted the item using a rope and found it to resemble a short length of PVC pipe, measuring approximately 4–6 inches. After a thorough inspection, it was determined not to be an explosive. Authorities believe it may have been deliberately planted as a decoy to distract or confuse investigators.

 

The two discoveries have prompted heightened security across Krabi’s coastal areas. Officials have not yet linked the incidents to any group but are actively pursuing leads and conducting forensic examinations.

 

Investigations are ongoing. Local residents and tourists are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious objects or activity to the authorities immediately.
