Lonely Planet Girl Seeks September Sunshine

Featured Replies

Hello everyone, 1st post here. I'm planning to stay on Ko Phangnan for the month of September. When I researched the weather (thanks, Jai Dee) the icons are all lightening and rain clouds. September rainfall is around 150-200mm, with an average temp of 32C/90F. Here's my questions: Does it drizzle all day or does it rain in one big downpour that eventually clears up? Is there any sun at all or is September just a miserable time to go? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hi meefun. welcome to the forum. Weather in Sept is generally quite nice, with occasional showers - although I was there in Sept once and it didn't rain for 3 weeks! That said, I'm sure many locals will tell you that you don't know what you're going to get. I was there in April this year and it rained for a whole week! (unheard of!)

I'd say go for it, take your chances!

It`s a tropical island. You can get rain every month. Just stay away from late october until late december and you will be ok.

One thread that has attracted quite a lot of posts over the past few weeks:

Self Defense on Ko Phangnan.

There are other nice places in Thailand where umbrellas are only used when it rains.

What exactly is the connection between Self Defence and the Weather.

Thanks everyone... you have all really made my day (even the self-defense post, hey I heard there's a Muay Thai camp there. Never know...). True thing happened today: Had lunch at a Chinese restaurant, the fortune cookie said, "A thrilling time is in your immediate future." Now I HAVE to go. Best to all.

~~~MeeFun~~~
hey that self defense post should not put anyone off of koh phangan. s*** happens everywhere.
Self Defense with an Umbrella,old Emma Peel & John Steed Style! Easy, isn't it? :o
By the way I am a strong believer in prevention, that means not to get involved in ANY situation where danger could loom!
On the other hand, NO risk, no fun!
Securing the place one lives in is a complete different story!
The only case I ever cam across in my seventeen years here on Samui, was more or less self inflicted!
A female guest decided way after midnight to leave for a swim on a remote beach on Samui.
As she left the premises, she did say: "Good night!" I assumed she left for her room.
But she went to the beach ALONE! To go nud_e for a swim, when she came out of the water she was confronted by 2 guys.
She screamed my Name, did attack the attackers, had some womens defense in College the very moment she felt free she came running up the beach, screaming the heck out of it and repeating my name (male), minutes later I rushed down with another males support, to the beach... but dead silence, screened the area with torches - to no avail - the "Birds" had flown...
After she understood that SHE made a BIG MISTAKE! Could have been her last....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Besides just one or two days before the event, they have been a group of six or eight, males form the Rugby Club of the College! Having drunk, noisy beach parties every night for a week or so....this may have caught the attention of the later attackers - they probaly where sneaking around for days... waiting for a "chance" to come and it came...
Well, good point, as a single female it is better to be intelligent and not put oneself in a dangerous situation but for some posters to assume that Koh Phangan is different from anywhere else in the world for a single female is foolishness. Women get attacked and raped every day in every part of the world. In fact, Koh Phangan can be fairly safe if one uses the brain god gave one.
September is usually lovely weather, October & November traditionally the rainiest. But, the weather is no longer as predictible as it was in the past so no guarantees.
Widen it to "the whole of Thailand" and we are getting there...
It's the usual weather "pattern"... but can't take it for granted might be fine weather all way into December and then... rain into February.
Nobody can tell, but I wish you nice an sunny Holiday's on KPG
