Fauja Singh, the world's oldest marathon runner, tragically passed away at the age of 114 following a hit-and-run incident in Punjab, India. The legendary athlete, renowned as the “Turbaned Tornado,” began his marathon journey in his late 80s, defying age stereotypes.

 

Fauja Singh was born in rural India in 1911 and later moved to London, where he embraced marathon running after the loss of his wife and son. Despite starting at 89, Singh successfully completed nine marathons and captured worldwide attention for his determination and resilience. Among his achievements, he became the first centenarian to complete a marathon, finishing the Toronto event in eight hours, 11 minutes.

 

The incident occurred near Singh's native village of Beas, and police officers are working tirelessly to trace the responsible vehicle. Authorities, including Jalandhar Rural Senior Superintendent of Police Harvinder Singh Virk, are utilising CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts in their investigation.

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has led tributes from around the globe, praising Singh's exceptional athletic abilities and indomitable spirit. Singh’s journey began when he took up running at 89, discovering a passion that brought him solace and renewed purpose.

 

Despite his remarkable achievements, Singh was unable to secure a Guinness World Record because he did not have a birth certificate. Yet, his legacy was marked by admiration and recognition, including a personal letter from Queen Elizabeth on his 100th birthday.

 

During his lifetime, Singh viewed running as more than just a sport; it served as a means of healing from personal loss. He found freedom on the track, which he expressed fondly, even at 102.

 

The running community and admirers worldwide mourn the loss of this extraordinary figure, who showed that age was no barrier to achieving greatness. His passion and perseverance continue to inspire future generations as investigation efforts proceed.
