The body of missing French national Lisa Girard was found this morning in the countryside outside Siem Reap, bringing a tragic end to a two-day search effort.

The 23-year-old was last seen on the morning of August 2nd near Ta Som Temple, where she had set out alone on a 21-kilometre run through the Angkor Archaeological Park. Friends raised the alarm after she failed to return and could not be contacted.

Intensive search operations were launched by Cambodian police, supported by volunteers and friends, who scoured forested trails and rural tracks throughout the park. A friend involved in the search confirmed the news on social media at 12:55pm today, writing, “Lisa’s body was found this morning. Thanks for the support of all those who have been looking for her or offering help.”

Girard was known as an adventurous and seasoned traveller. In 2024, she hitchhiked from Paris to Phnom Penh, a four-month journey across 15 countries, to raise funds for the Cambodian NGO Pour un Sourire d’Enfant. She had since made Cambodia her second home.

Her disappearance had prompted an outpouring of concern and support online. Witnesses had reported seeing her running past locations such as Sras Srang lake and near the Angkor ticket office. Despite these leads, the search proved difficult due to the vastness of the Angkor site and its challenging terrain.

As of this afternoon, Cambodian authorities have not released details regarding the cause of death. An investigation is ongoing.

It's standard procedure to keep the details secret initially until they know what's what.

Sad news. RIP.
