Cambodian Monks to Honour Fallen Soldiers in Pchum Ben Rites

In a poignant call for remembrance and compassion, Cambodia’s Supreme Patriarch of the Mohanikaya Order, Venerable Am Limheng, has instructed monks nationwide to dedicate this year’s Pchum Ben ceremonies to fallen soldiers and displaced civilians affected by recent Thai border incursions.

The directive, issued Wednesday with support from the Ministry of Cults and Religion, urges pagodas across the country to hold almsgiving rituals and merit-making ceremonies from 8 to 22 September. Pchum Ben, one of Cambodia’s most sacred festivals, traditionally honours the spirits of deceased ancestors—but this year, it will carry a deeper national resonance.

A striking image accompanying the announcement shows nearly 30 ID-style photographs of dead soldiers, arranged solemnly in tribute. Their faces, frozen in time, serve as a stark reminder of the human cost of conflict and the enduring need for peace.

Venerable Limheng emphasised that merit should be offered not only to parents and ancestors, but especially to those who died defending Cambodia’s sovereignty. He also called on monasteries to extend compassion through donations of food and supplies to evacuees, orphans, the elderly, and other vulnerable groups.

“All monks and laypeople must strive to fulfil their respective roles and responsibilities,” he said, urging the faithful to uphold Dharma, cultivate virtue, and support both physical and mental well-being.

The initiative has been warmly received by senior clergy. Venerable Im Tieng of Wat Sirisakorn Daun Steng in Prey Veng province described it as “a reflection of deep compassion and national solidarity.”

As tensions along the Thai border continue to unsettle communities, the ceremonies offer a moment of collective healing. In honouring the dead, Cambodia’s monastic order is also reaffirming its commitment to peace, unity, and the spiritual resilience of its people.
