UK Freezes Refugee Family Reunion Scheme Amidst Border Crisis

The UK government has officially suspended new applications for the scheme that allows refugees to reunite with family members in the UK without restrictions. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced that refugees will now face similar rules as other migrants, requiring an income of at least £29,000 annually and suitable accommodation. This move comes amidst growing criticism over border security and the use of hotels for asylum seekers.

The Conservative shadow home secretary, Chris Philp, slammed the changes as insufficient, demanding more robust action against the ongoing "border security crisis." As Parliament reconvened after a summer break dominated by small boat crossings, Cooper explained the need for updated rules to align with European nations such as Denmark and Switzerland, where similar applications take up to two years. In contrast, the UK processes these applications in about a month, leading to cases of homelessness among refugee families.

The revised policies have sparked debate, with opponents urging stronger measures. Philp advocated for the revival of the discontinued Rwanda plan, aimed at dissuading illegal cross-Channel migration.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer criticised the current system, highlighting the urgency for efficient processing of asylum cases and local opposition to asylum-seeker hotels. Starmer promised to eliminate the use of such hotels by 2029, with hopes to accelerate the process, reported the BBC.

The government's agenda includes a review of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), considering changes to its application in immigration matters. Some within the Conservative Party suggest disapplying the ECHR, while others, including Reform UK, support withdrawing entirely.

Meanwhile, Cooper indicated that the first migrant returns under the UK's agreement with France are expected later this month, amidst a record year for crossings, with over 28,000 migrants arriving in small boats so far.

The smug, self satisifed grin remains optional.

How about letting them re-unite with family by returning to their own countries?
Oh I forgot, many of them already do that. Many go on holiday to the counties that they have left. The same countries where they claimed that their lives were in danger.

Labour often bribe them to leave with thousands in cash, then add them to the number "deported".  😆

They probably return by dinghy once they spent the cash.

Yes many go home to visit thier wives despite claiming asylum because they are persecuted for being gay.

Others just pretend to be gay then marry a woman. 😆
