President Emmanuel Macron has appointed Sébastien Lecornu as the new French prime minister. This decision follows a vote of confidence that ousted François Bayrou just a day earlier. Lecornu, previously the armed forces minister, is tasked with navigating France's political challenges, particularly the budget.

The Élysée Palace announced Lecornu's appointment, stressing the need for political consultations to adopt France's next budget. The previous prime minister, Bayrou, faced opposition while attempting to push through budget cuts, which resulted in his government's defeat in the National Assembly by 364 to 194 votes. Lecornu now becomes Macron’s fifth prime minister during his second term.

Lecornu's immediate challenge is addressing France's significant public debt, which stands at €3.3 trillion, equivalent to 114% of its GDP. He expressed his commitment to defending France's independence and stability. Meanwhile, reactions have varied: centrist allies are in support, urging compromise for stability, while left and far-right opponents remain sceptical.

The political landscape remains tense. Jean-Luc Mélenchon of the radical left and Marine Le Pen of the far right have criticised the appointment, while Édouard Philippe, a former prime minister, supports Lecornu’s capabilities. Philippe notes Lecornu's experience and believes a compromise with the Socialists may prevent further political unrest.

Looking ahead, Lecornu must secure alliances in a fragmented parliament composed of left, centre, and far-right blocs. The grassroots group “Bloquons Tout” plans extensive protests, and authorities are preparing significant police deployments. Moreover, credit agency Fitch's forthcoming assessment of France's debts could influence the country's financial standing.
