Angkor Wat welcomed nearly 20,000 visitors yesterday morning as crowds gathered to witness the rare and spectacular Equinox sunrise—a celestial event that occurs only twice a year. From as early as 5 AM, tourists lined the temple’s northern bank and surrounding ponds, hoping to catch the golden rays as they pierced the horizon and aligned precisely with the central tower.

This natural phenomenon, visible during the Spring and Autumn Equinoxes, sees the rising sun framed perfectly by the temple’s architecture. The effect is both spiritual and cinematic: sunlight streams through the central spire, casting a shimmering reflection across the ponds and illuminating the ancient stonework in a warm, golden glow.

Many visitors, both local and international, described the moment as unforgettable. Though some had visited Angkor Wat before, this was their first time experiencing the Equinox alignment, which they called “unmatched anywhere in the world.”

According to Seng Sotheara of the Apsara National Authority, the event drew 1,307 foreign tourists and over 18,000 Cambodians. The turnout reflects growing interest in Cambodia’s cultural heritage and the enduring allure of Angkor Wat’s sacred geometry.

The Equinox sunrise is not just a visual spectacle—it’s a testament to the temple’s ancient design, where architecture and astronomy converge in perfect harmony.
