Philippine police detained 49 individuals on Sunday following violent clashes during an anti-corruption rally in Manila. The group is accused of throwing rocks, bottles, and fire bombs at officers and obstructing roads to the presidential palace. The unrest unfolded as over 33,000 protesters peacefully gathered at a nearby park and democracy monument to voice their discontent over a corruption scandal involving lawmakers and construction companies.

The violent confrontation involved approximately 100 people, many armed with clubs, who injured around 70 police officers. The attackers caused widespread damage, including graffiti, destruction of steel posts, and vandalism of a budget inn. Despite deploying tear gas, police struggled to identify the perpetrators, who brandished black flags with skull and crossbones emblems. President Marcos Jr.'s whereabouts during the incident remain unconfirmed.

The arresting officers emphasized that although the situation was brought under control, further acts of violence and vandalism would be strictly addressed. Protests were sparked by revelation of an ongoing corruption scandal surrounding flood-control projects. The controversy originally came to light in July, highlighted by President Marcos during his annual address.

Student activist Althea Trinidad, from the flood-prone Bulacan province, voiced frustration over governmental corruption and its impact on the impoverished citizens. Adding to the dialogue, Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David urged for peaceful demonstrations and accountability. He emphasized the necessity of non-violence to promote democratic integrity.

Given President Marcos’s establishment of an independent commission to explore corruption in 9,855 flood-control projects, public anger has intensified. The luxury lifestyle of a couple managing several implicated construction firms further fueled resentment, particularly a showcase of European and American luxury cars, including a 42 million peso British vehicle purchased for its complimentary umbrella.

Key Takeaways

  • 49 arrests made amid violent protests in Manila, with 70 officers injured.
  • The corruption scandal involves alleged kickbacks from flood-control projects.
  • President Marcos has initiated an independent inquiry into the projects.
