Thailand's Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, has announced his intention to dissolve the House within four months following the presentation of his government’s policy, with a general election anticipated in early April next year. This decision was disclosed during a news conference after the inaugural Cabinet meeting. Anutin has coordinated with House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha to schedule a House meeting from September 28-30 for policy presentation.

Anutin emphasised a commitment to conducting a national referendum aimed at drafting a new constitution with public involvement. This referendum will coincide with the upcoming election, ensuring citizens have a say in the process. Anutin plans to dissolve the House in January, setting the stage for elections either in late March or early April. The government’s focus will be addressing economic woes, such as reducing living costs through cheaper transportation, energy prices, and the co-payment programme.

The Prime Minister also discussed strategies for resolving the border dispute with Cambodia, highlighting a mix of military and diplomatic measures to safeguard Thailand’s sovereignty and interests. Enhancements to the early warning system are planned, aimed at improving responses to natural disasters, guaranteeing timely aid, and ensuring proper compensation for affected individuals.

Addressing drug trafficking, gambling, and scam centres will be key government priorities. Despite the focus on these issues, Anutin reiterated that his administration does not plan to legalise casinos or online gambling and maintains a firm stance against such moves.

Key Takeaways:

  • Anutin aims to dissolve the House by January, with elections anticipated by early April.
  • A national referendum will occur alongside the election for a new constitution.
  • The government will target economic relief, border security, and crackdowns on criminal activities.

No alcohol allowed for the entire duration.

Note to tourists, don't come to Thailand in April!

Thought they promised four months, not six.

A strong turn-out... for street parties

I don't get it; why wait for April next year. What could be done today should not be postponed to tomorrow - at least that is, what I was brought up with .......

Dissolve the house after 4 months..............end of January  but another 3 months before an election is held????????????    Something wrong there!

An election is to be held within 60 days after House dissolution. So February-March. Not Apri:

"setting the stage for elections either in late March or early April."

But the question is why the initial 4 months delay?

The explanation given is "dissolve the House within four months following the presentation of his government’s policy." The Anutin government is a "caretaker" government" that shouldn't present and effect any new government policy except in emergency related to national security.

A caretaker government is essentially a "status quo" government.

What Anutin is doing in effect it seems planning political activities to advance his or party election before the election period is actually held.

I have lived out in rural Kamphaeng Phet for over 21 years and I have yet to see a pig fly past the house.

I don't think I will be holding my breath next April either.

April would make it 8 months. Doesn't matter. The result is already decided.🙃🙃
