How Will The Court Ruling Affect Man City

I think there is already some thread in another section about the arrest warrents, but it would be interesting to see what the opinioons are from the football fans, and not the political agitators. :o

If you haven't read it, here's the report from the BBC.

Thai court orders Thaksin arrest

Mr Thaksin has remained abroad since last year's bloodless coup

Thailand's Supreme Court has issued a warrant for the arrest of ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on corruption charges.

The ruling came after Mr Thaksin and his wife failed to attend court in the Thai capital, Bangkok.

The court was to hear the first of a series of cases being brought against the former leader, who was ousted in a military coup last year.

Since then he has been living in the UK and recently bought Manchester City FC.

Mr Thaksin had been ordered to appear at the hearing to listen to charges that he abused his power while in office, by helping his wife buy land from a state agency at a favourable price.

He denies any wrongdoing and says the charges against him are politically motivated.

Telecoms tycoon

His lawyers had asked for the case against him to be postponed until after general elections promised for December, arguing that he would not get a fair trial.

But the court's nine-member panel ordered that he appear in time for a new hearing on 25 September.

"The court has approved arrest warrants against the two suspects," Judge Tonglor Chomngarm said. "Both should be brought before the court."

Thailand's attorney-general and the prosecution have indicated that if they could seek Mr Thaksin's extradition from the UK if he does not turn up at the next hearing.

The two countries have a long-standing extradition treaty, although each case is decided on its merits, the BBC's Jonathan Head reports from Bangkok.

A special committee is currently investigating another 12 cases of alleged corruption during Mr Thaksin's administration, our correspondent adds.

Prosecutors argue that Mr Thaksin, already a wealthy telecoms tycoon when he first took office, became abnormally rich while prime minister. He denies this, saying the value of his family's company increased in line with other businesses in Thailand.

If Mr Thaksin were to be convicted, our correspondent says, that could pose a problem for the English Premier League, as he might - as the new owner of Manchester City football club - be in breach of the League's rules.

Just my two satangs worth, but I hope that this gets resolved without affecting the football club. I'm no fan of Mr T, but I would hate to see this get blown out of the water. I would imagine that as long a he stays in the UK there won't be to many problems, as I think the British government aren't to keen these days on doing business with Juntas, and as his assets are over there it will be pretty difficult for them to seize. As long as the Junta is in power then there should be no problems, things however may change once an elected government takes power and that may have an impact on City, although Thaksin has probably covered most of the basius already.

I'd be interested to hear what the City fans think. BTW this is not a United fan having a gloat. :D

I think they were MAD getting into bed with him in the first place.

Do anybody do any research any more ?

He won't go home any time soon voluntarily without an amnesty of some kind. So unless he ends up like Benigno Aquino or the Thais manager to freeze all his assets, I don't think they should worry too much for now.

My thoughts were always that - in fact I predicted that when all this furore over West Ham and the Tevez saga died down then Citeh may well be the next.

In a way I'm a bit sorry for the Citeh fans. But if those who took his filthy lucre in the first place didn't consider Thaksin's track record then they'll get what they deserve.

If the Thai courts are serious, and the warrant goes International, then I imagine there would be a problem.. However, that's probably a big "IF"

I'd be lying if i said i wasn't concerned but it was what we expected. He openly said that he wouldn't go to the first hearing and that would lead to an arrest warrant. So we (and more importantly Thaksin) knew it was going to happen. He has constantly said he wants to wait until after the elections and will not go back before then. So, like i said we knew it was going to happen. But it doesn't mean i like it.

I'm not sure the UK govt would consider extraditing him while there is a less than legitimate govt in Thailand. I hope not anyway.

So what has Thaksin done that's so legitimate that he deserves such special consideration in a semi-fuedal/corrupt society ?

Effecitively abused his power to rip-off the Thai people. Ordered 2,000 to be shot dead - many of whom possesed 20 ya-ba or less, after being planted when the mafia largely got away scot free. Then the extrajudicial killings and arbitrary arrests. His “brutal” attempts to suppress an insurgency in the south of Thailand which led to the deaths of hundreds of ethnic Malay Muslims. Which even the UN expressed "deep concern" about.

Other incidents include: illegal abductions, arbitrary detentions, torture and other mistreatment of persons and attacks on media freedoms.

Do me a favour my fellow Hammer. At least the coup was bloodless. Which is more than can be said for Thaksin's hands.

The sad thing is that Citeeh supporters hardly raised even so much as a whimper about having him as their propieter.

I'm sure Thaksins pillow is softer than mine. Especially if it's stuffed with £20 notes :bah:

The fact the the society is semi-feudal and corrup and currently has a military govt that silences dissenters is a good reason not to trust their motives.

I think in Buddhism they have something called co-dependent origination. Meaning everything is connected and one thing happens because of another, and not in isolation. Ooops :o

Well tht's killed the thread then. How can you discuss Thaksin without mentioning why he's an exile from Thailand ?

HH, whilst I am no fan of Thaksin, the original questiuon is about the effect that the judgement/arrest warrant will affect Man City. So we are not discussing the fact that he is guilty or not guilty, but what will happen if the heat is turned up on him, and how tis will affect City.

BTW, I can understand why the mere mention Mr T get's people rankled -either you love him or hate him, I'm more interested in what he may or may not do to the football.

B-b-b-but I never said that. See my - less direct - edited post. Bah, you're too quick. :o:D

If the "heat is turned up on him" and how that effects Citeeh is dependent on what happens in Thailand to a large extent. So it's difficult not to mention the stuation in Thailand as well.

But to be honest, mate. I can't discuss anything Thaksin related without a burning indignation about his human rights record. So maybe I should avoid it when there's a pedantry about comparmentalised subjects.

I do think it a shame that we have to more or less say, "but what's the rest of it got to do with football?" It has loads, in this instance especially. So I think that we seem to agree.

But as for the 'flaming' bit. Then the moderator is probably right.

Old socalists die hard I guess. :o

HH, I don't think that it was what you had written was the problem, it just looked that some others were going to use it as an opportunity to turn it into a Love Thaksin/Hate Thaksin argument which I don't think anyone wants. I though that you had mentioned some valid points, so I do hope that you don't think I'm getting on my high horse :D

If he gets convicted in Thailand, which is a matter of time, he should be disqualified from sitting on Man City's board. How would that affect the club?

Has there been a precedent of a club owner being disqualified?

Then there are issues with his visa and residency - what if he applies for asylum? How that would affect his legal position?

In the meantime City fans shouldn't worry themselves too much as it's out of their hands anymore and there's nothing they can do, they'd better enjoy the current winning streak. At least until Saturday.

If it all goes well they might find other investors.

That's what I never understood all along. They are a club with massive potential and would easily attracted other investors - anyone with an ounce of savvy wouldn't have touched Thaksin with a bargepole.

I am somewhat curious to how he has been able to obtain clearance through the fit and proper persons interview, with so many disturbing allegations against him as well as what type of Visa he has been able to obtain. My own feeling is, that the UK government will not do much for the time being as they will not want to be seen to be co-operating with an unelecated ditatorship with some rather nefarious agendas. However, this situation will change, if and when a democratically elected government in Thailand is elected and campaogns for his extradition. I am seeing more problems than answears here for City, with Thaksin's numerous baggage and some of the political wrangling may have some unsavouray consequences for the club.

Allegations are not convictions.

I posted somewhere the full "fit and proper test". I'll try and find it again if you want. But if you read it, he clearly passes it.

Like the FA have also said, if the UK govn't are ok to let him in here who are the FA to say any differently?
