A wave of violent crimes targeting South Koreans in Cambodia has triggered diplomatic tensions, public alarm, and a chilling effect on tourism and business ties between the two nations.

The crisis escalated following the brutal death of Park Min-ho, a 22-year-old South Korean student, whose body was discovered near Bokor Mountain in August. Cambodian police say Park was kidnapped by a criminal gang demanding 50 million won (£30,000), then tortured and killed. Three suspects linked to Chinese-run online fraud operations have been charged with murder and technology-related fraud, while a fourth remains at large.

Park’s case is the latest in a disturbing trend. Reports of Koreans being lured by fake job offers, then detained and forced into online scams, have surged—from fewer than 20 cases in 2022 to over 330 by August this year. Survivors face trauma and financial ruin, while the Korean community in Cambodia warns of growing fear and economic fallout.

“People are saying, ‘Keep your head down. Don’t draw attention to yourself,’” said Chung Myung-kyu, head of the Korean Association of Cambodia. Local businesses report cancelled contracts and a sharp drop in Korean tourists, as social media fuels panic with claims of forced labour and abduction.

In Seoul, President Lee Jae Myung has ordered “all-out measures” to protect citizens abroad. Foreign Minister Cho Hyun summoned Cambodia’s ambassador to formally protest Park’s death and urged swift action against scam networks. Plans are underway to establish a “Korean Desk” within Cambodia’s police force to improve coordination.

Cambodian officials insist the violence is confined to border areas and warn against painting the country as lawless. But the damage is done: trust is eroding, and bilateral relations are under strain.

As investigations continue, the Korean government is tightening travel advisories and pressing for deeper cooperation to stem the tide of crime—and restore a sense of safety for its citizens abroad.

Funny that far-away Sth Korea suffers from Cambodia's border scams, just as Thailand does ...

Looking forward to armed border clashes between them.
