US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff has commended UK National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell for his significant contributions in negotiating a ceasefire in Gaza. Witkoff highlighted Powell's tireless efforts and noted the UK's vital participation in the peace process. This comes amid contrasting statements from US ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, criticising the UK's involvement as delusional.

The recognition from Witkoff serves as a boost for Powell, who is currently under scrutiny regarding his involvement in a collapsed espionage court case. Powell and Witkoff have developed a close working relationship, strengthened through their collaborative efforts on issues like the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Recently, Powell was in Egypt as the Gaza ceasefire deal, initially brokered by Donald Trump, was finalised.

The ceasefire marks an end to more than two years of conflict in Gaza, with further negotiations required on remaining contentious issues. Powell's experience in brokering the Good Friday Agreement is expected to be invaluable in future discussions, particularly on decommissioning weapons in Gaza. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has emphasised the UK's behind-the-scenes involvement in the diplomatic process.

Responses to the ceasefire have been varied, with Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel and US ambassador Huckabee expressing criticism. Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and world leaders gathered in Sharm el-Sheikh to witness the agreement's signing. The ceasefire has led to the release of hostages and prisoners, with humanitarian aid entering Gaza.

Sir Keir expressed confidence in Powell's role and highlighted the importance of implementing the deal effectively. While British troops will not participate in peacekeeping, the UK aims to assist in monitoring the ceasefire and decommissioning Hamas's weapons. Sir Keir praised Powell's abilities and contributions, acknowledging his past successes in conflict resolution in Northern Ireland and beyond.

Key Takeaways:

  • US envoy Witkoff praises UK's Jonathan Powell for ceasefire efforts.
  • The ceasefire involves key international negotiations and prisoner exchanges.
  • UK government aims to support ongoing peace efforts without military involvement.

Wait, what?! You mean others were involved in the peace accord? I thought it was solely due to trump?
