Pizza Hut is set to close 68 restaurants and 11 delivery sites across the UK, resulting in the loss of 1,210 jobs. The firm operating them, DC London Pie Limited, has fallen into administration, prompting Yum! Brands, Pizza Hut's global owner, to step in and save 64 other locations, preserving 1,276 jobs.

DC London Pie Limited, which managed Pizza Hut's UK restaurants, appointed FTI Consulting as administrators as of Monday. This development comes less than a year after the operation was rescued from insolvency, with DC London Pie acquiring Pizza Hut UK's restaurants in January. Yum! Brands remains committed to ensuring operational continuity and providing support to its employees throughout the transition, despite these challenges.

Pizza Hut has been a staple in family dining with its distinctive salad bars but has faced increasing competition in the UK market. The company has been struggling to keep pace with a shift towards higher-end pizza options, according to Zoe Adjay, a senior lecturer at the University of East London. She notes the brand's struggle to maintain relevancy in an evolving market and its limited presence on social media.

Danni Hewson from AJ Bell highlights that rising operational costs and consumer caution have also played significant roles in Pizza Hut’s difficulties. Despite last year's efforts to steer the business away from insolvency, the task of revitalising such a well-known casual dining brand proved formidable.

Looking forward, Yum! Brands is anticipated to leverage its extensive experience to find the right blend of data and strategy to ensure success at the remaining locations. The focus remains on continuing to serve Pizza Hut’s guests effectively while protecting as many jobs as possible.

Key Takeaways

  • Pizza Hut will close 68 UK outlets, impacting 1,210 jobs.
  • Yum! Brands will save 64 locations and 1,276 jobs.
  • Challenges include market competition and high operational costs.

Nor do observant Jews.

If it is pepperoni, Hawaiian, or Italian sausage pizza they won't touch it.

That demographic may be small but they are influential beyond their numbers.

More unemployment, more dissent. I doubt whether religion has much to do with it.

Indonesia and Malaysia Pizza Hut are halal certified.

Wouldn't be surprised if Papa John's in the UK does go down the (deep) pan soon. Nearly £20 for what is basically a large piece of cheese on toast with a glass of (mostly ice) coke. Outrageous prices.

It's like fish and chips. Used to be a bargain meal. I paid £16 for Haddock and chips a couple of months ago when back in the UK. It was delicious but expensive.

Rachel from accounts and her budget for recession.

If you think this is bad, wait for her next budget.

At least cardboard boxes will be in demand.

Remember when Pizza Hut used to be good?

It's more to do with Deliveroo, Uber, JustEats. Note they article says "closing restaurants".

Too many people now order online to eat at home.

Really? Not shifting to high-end pizza offerings did them in? I find that hard to believe.  People had less and less money because everything gets more expensive. Offering a good value pizza should actually safe that place!

Joking aside, a few years ago I went to 2 different Pizza Huts and both had taken all pork based toppings off the menu (to placate our peaceful friends). That meant my favourite pizza wasn't available.

Never went back to Pizza Hut after that.

No, I don't.

To me it was always on the lower end of the scale. Almost as bad as Domino's.

The Gold Standard is the pizza made by New York Italians.

Small places in Little Italy, Court St. in Brooklyn, and Arthur Ave. in the Bronx make it like nowhere else.

When Frank Sinatra was staying at the Plaza he would have it sent up from a little hole-in-the-wall place under the BB on the Brooklyn side. The delivery boys would love the run because there was always a C-note tip at the end of it.

In CM The Duke's is pretty good - close, but no cigar.

Did you only read the headline?

Literally the first sentence of the article says:

Pizza Hut is set to close 68 restaurants and 11 delivery sites across the UK

I did see that but, as the headline number is the same as the number of restaurants in the article, I think it's safe to assume the delivery sites are within those restaurants closing.
