Vance and Rubio Blast Israeli West Bank Annexation Vote

US Vice-President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have sharply criticised the Israeli parliament's symbolic approval of a bill aimed at annexing the occupied West Bank. The move by far-right politicians in the Knesset was described by Vance as a "very stupid political stunt", while Rubio warned it could jeopardise President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza.

The bill, which seeks to apply Israeli law in the West Bank, passed its preliminary stage in a 25-24 vote. This development follows decades of contentious debates over territory that Palestinians wish to claim as part of an independent state. Israel has built around 160 settlements in the area, housing 700,000 Jews, with Palestinians in the region numbering approximately 3.3 million.

Netanyahu's office quickly distanced itself from the bill, labelling it a provocative act by opposition factions. The statement assured that without support from Netanyahu's Likud party, the bill would likely stall. The US administration's stance remains clear, as expressed by Vance: “The West Bank will not be annexed by Israel."

The Palestinian foreign ministry condemned the Knesset's move, asserting Israel lacks sovereignty over Palestinian land. This situation puts pressure on Trump's administration, which has been trying to implement a phased peace plan for Gaza. The ongoing efforts include introducing a ceasefire and aid influx, crucial steps already in place after recent escalations in the region.

The next stages of the peace initiative involve establishing an interim government in Gaza and disarming Hamas. Despite the contentious vote, both Vance and Rubio expressed optimism in maintaining the current ceasefire, essential for progressing through Trump’s 20-point peace strategy. The stakes remain high, as any step perceived as annexation could destabilise regional peace efforts.

Key Takeaways

  • Israeli Knesset symbolically approves West Bank annexation bill.
  • US officials warn the move could threaten Trump’s Gaza peace plan.
  • Palestinians and international bodies condemn Israel's annexation bid.

This should not surprise anyone since Israel has been trying to drive out all Palestinians and annex their land for the past 70 years, ever since the UN divided Palestine up into areas for the Jews and the Palestinians.😡

They blast the decision, but will keep supporting Israel unconditionally, thereby enabling the annexation.

Vance and Rubio are fellow Taco-nians and will change their position on a dime. No one in the administration is trust worthy and decent.

OMG ... couldn't agree more, scary sh!t, that is  :w00t:

My hate for Israel grows every day, worse, the USA constantly supports them.   Never a doubt in my mind, and kind of points out, who actually controls the USA ... IMHO

Hate is a bad thing. Blinds judgement and reality.

Hate is a bit strong, except when thinking about the USS Liberty.   Loath, disgust, better for the rest of my thoughts about Israel, how they've dominated that little corner and simply expanded, controlling all aspect of Palestinians lives already, while throwing them, Palestinians, out the their homes and land, and expanding their settlements.

Now thinking about annexing and simply taking it for themselves.  Pure EVIL ... IMHO

I think the message is do what you like quietly. Don’t officially announce it as it bothers our gulf Arab donors. But the messianic hardliners aren’t that sophisticated and are impatient.

BS, Netanyahu has encouraged annexation and expulsion of Palestinians for 30 years.

Yes, it’s all show. However, Israel can not ethnically cleanse Gaza now, there are too many watching and I suspect Trump is in a dilemma, he doesn’t like taking orders from ‘the lobby’, but has to if he wants to survive politically. Netanyahu must keep the troubles going to survive himself, sad state of affairs which will mean no peace until Israel are MADE stop their settler violence and annexation by the UN or Trump.

What are they going to do about it - nothing. They should immediately impose sanctions on Israel.

Does anyone here support the annexation?
