Elon Musk Unveils Grokipedia to Rival 'Woke' Wikipedia

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has launched Grokipedia, a new online encyclopedia driven by artificial intelligence and positioned as an alternative to Wikipedia. This initiative was sparked by David Sacks, a Trump administration AI adviser and fellow tech investor, with Musk aiming to offer a platform that aligns more closely with conservative views. Musk has criticised Wikipedia for its use of certain news sources, describing it as "woke" and claiming that an AI-generated encyclopedia is essential for civilisation.

Unlike Wikipedia, Grokipedia lacks clear human authorship, as its content is reviewed by Grok, an AI chatbot developed by Musk’s xAI startup. While Wikipedia allows public edits, Grokipedia invites users to suggest changes through a form but doesn't permit direct modifications. Some articles on Grokipedia currently cite Wikipedia as their source, though Musk intends to eliminate this reliance by year’s end.

Differences between the two platforms include variations in content, such as Grokipedia's omission of certain controversial details about public figures compared to Wikipedia. The Wikimedia Foundation, Wikipedia’s host, remarked that despite Musk’s project, Wikipedia will continue to thrive through its collaborative and diverse community, highlighting that AI-driven alternatives have emerged before without disrupting its mission.

Grokipedia enters as a challenger to Wikipedia, one of the internet’s most visited sites, ranking ninth worldwide in traffic. While Wikipedia champions an open, collaborative model, it has faced past critique, including claims of bias, notably from co-founder Larry Sanger. Grokipedia currently boasts 885,000 articles in its initial phase, marking it as version 0.1, which suggests expansions are anticipated.

Key Takeaways

  • Elon Musk launched Grokipedia as a conservative alternative to Wikipedia.
  • Grokipedia uses AI for content review and lacks Wikipedia’s open-edit model.
  • Wikipedia remains confident, viewing Grokipedia as another AI-generated experiment.

Particularly Musk himself?

In other words, eugenics. Get rid of the people whose views you don't like.

Whoever would you want to crowd-source accurate information from people?!? Yuck.

Elon Musk has money. Jimmy Wales has integrity. Big difference.

Heinlein would be puking.

Wikipedia lists references of sources so users can see where the information comes for themselves and judge the veracity of the data. Musk's own page has 523 such references.

Pages can be verified, contested and altered if better or more up to date info appears. It can never be 100% accurate, no source can, but it's relatively independent and largely dependable. I doubt Grokipedia will be.

Exactly. A Wikipedia article is (only) worth the sources it uses. That's the first thing to check!

Or, for the sake of clarity, get rid of the people with an obvious bias whose views are clearly skewed. What he’s trying to do could easily be misconstrued if one is of a certain political bent. Let’s face it, Wiki can be horribly bias. Pretty much the same as this or any other site if the you know who’s deem an article/comment not fit a certain mould. Some beaut will be along in a minute to suggest how awfully ‘racist’ (fav misused word of the decade for the confused) he is for even attempting such an endeavour. 😴

I'm sure Musk's version will reach  DOgGE 100% efficiency ....until he gets bored with it

I do wonder why western countries are taking no action against him?

He literally called for revolution in the streets of the UK, to a bunch of far right racists. Funding right wingers. No action was taken against him. Can you imagine had a Muslim or someone Russia had said the things he had said.

I go on X and the literal vile racism that is imbedded there (under the guise of free speech) is ridiculous. It's sending people down a rabbit hole of racism and hate. The algorythm is destructive.

I sit with guys in Pattaya, usually British guys, and they are getting further and further radicalised with this nonsense. They are no different to other religious nuts who become radicalised against the west with their hate.

You have bot factories around the world spreading misinformation everywhere on that platform.

Yet these leaders, be it the EU, UK, even Australia do nothing. No fines nothing.

Those damn far right houswives that are sick of mass immigration. Lock em up. Immigration/illegal immigration is out of control in the UK.

Besides the tone deaf name, Grokipedia, it's another example of Musk stealing or buying an idea that will eventually die when he gets bored.

Excellent news. Within 12 months bedding in period this will be massive.

In Musk We Trust.

No thanks! I'd rather be "woke" than have to "grok" for information.

Groke is the new woke. 😀

Think what good this person could actually be doing with his fortune rather than this nonsensense. Never enters his self serving head I guess.

There's a balance. I think that balance is education. Society does not profit from censorship no matter how vile.

Wikipedia is reliable only for things that are strictly factual, requiring no opinion.

Such as, what is population of X, what is the birth date of Y, who is the PM of Thailand.   The moment you stray into something "political" you will invariably find opinion being paraded as fact, like reading the Daily Mail or the Guardian.

Brits in Pattaya bars at 2pm blind drunk are going to love this.

Actually, "woke" is very similar to "grok," which is defined online as: "to understand intuitively or by empathy, to establish rapport with" and "to empathize or communicate sympathetically (with); also, to experience enjoyment."Oxford English Dictionary - Wikipedia
