Military Sites to House 900 Asylum Seekers in the UK

Hundreds of asylum seekers are set to be relocated to two military sites in Inverness and East Sussex, according to plans revealed by the UK government. These plans come as Prime Minister Keir Starmer prioritises ending the use of costly hotel accommodations, which have sparked anti-migrant protests. The government aims to close asylum hotels by 2029, opting instead for military bases to house asylum seekers by November.

The two sites include Cameron Barracks in Inverness and Crowborough Army Training Camp in East Sussex. Defence Minister Luke Pollard stated that while these accommodations aren't luxurious, they meet essential needs. This change is anticipated to reduce reliance on hotel accommodations, which currently house around 32,000 asylum seekers at a significant expense.

Reactions to the plans are mixed. Inverness MP Angus MacDonald expressed concerns about security, while East Sussex MP Nusrat Ghani criticised the decision, despite the historical use of these sites for similar purposes.

The Home Office insists that all locations will adhere to health and safety standards, despite criticisms of past conditions at MDP Wethersfield and Napier Barracks. These two former military sites continue to operate under contracts with the Home Office, providing temporary housing for single adult men.

In the coming months, ministers will continue assessing the suitability of various sites, including industrial and previously unused areas. The government spokesman has highlighted the public demand to close "luxury" accommodations and transition to less costly options. As the situation develops, the Refugee Council warns against swapping one ineffective system for another.

Key Takeaways:

  • UK plans to house 900 asylum seekers in military sites by November.
  • Mixed reactions arise from local politicians and residents.
  • Government continues to explore alternatives to hotel accommodations.

So army bunk beds, instead of 4 star hotels, well at least its a start!!

A good start.

But it seems a waste of a perfect good military site.

Surely there must be some abandoned warehouses or aircraft hangers in a remote location that we could surround with barbed wire fences and a few lookout towers?

Perhaps a Glastonbury style setup would keep the lefties happy since they don't consider that a border?

Still no solution  .useless Government ,No Brains just  wasting the peoples tax money.

Close the borders 100 % if they try to come into the country ,take them back where they came from . No excuses .

900? That could be one day's small boat arrivals. Also, I guarantee they'll be luxurious in comparison to what we lived in whilst in the mob. Don't think the people in the are are going to be pleased either, especially those with kids, unless they keep all the illegals behind the wire.

Wow, the milk of human kindness is in full flow here.

I’ll say it again: I bet that UK immigration has had no material negative effect on the lives of the above haters.
Before any hater shouts “ housing crisis, can’t get doctor’s appointment!”

Nah, the UK social problems are a result of 46 years of successively right wing governments defunding local government and Brexiturds shouting at foreign workers to “go home” .

Caerphilly could be the turning point.

Asylum seekers housed in military sites isn’t the problem imho.

It is those allowed to roam around freely that are:

That was an absolutely tragic story. He even stabbed a 14 year old boy during the same incident.

No illegal should be allowed to roam freely IMO. Set up secure camps and keep them in there in extremely basic conditions (tents, shipping containers etc.) until they can be deported. If they know that's where they will be housed for months on end before deportation, they will stay in France.
