British Teen Faces Two Years in Georgia Prison After Plea Deal

British teenager Bella May Culley, 19, who was arrested in Georgia on drug smuggling charges, could face a two-year prison sentencefollowing a plea agreement reportedly worth more than $180,000, according to her lawyer. The deal, now in its final stage, is expected to significantly reduce her potential sentence, which initially carried up to 15 years or life imprisonment.

Culley was detained in May at Tbilisi Airport, where authorities accused her of attempting to smuggle 12 kilograms of marijuana and 2 kilograms of hashish into the country. Her lawyer, Malkhaz Salakhaia, said on Tuesday that “all the conditions under which a plea agreement will be concluded regarding the charges against Bella May Culley are known” to both her and her family. He added that only technical matters remain before finalisation, with the verdict expected soon.

Under Georgian law, financial plea agreements are permitted in certain criminal cases, allowing for reduced or suspended sentences. Such arrangements are frequently used in drug-related cases, and Salakhaia indicated that the final terms being discussed include a two-year custodial sentence. He also noted that Culley may be eligible for a presidential pardon if convicted.

Culley’s mother, Lyanne Kennedy, confirmed that the family had paid 500,000 lari (approximately $184,000) as part of the plea bargain. Speaking to reporters outside the court in Tbilisi on 28 October 2025, Kennedy appeared visibly emotional as she attended the hearing alongside her daughter’s legal team.

The case has drawn attention not only because of Culley’s age and pregnancy but also due to her claims of torture in Thailand before travelling to Georgia. She had been reported missing from Teesside, in north-east England, before her arrest on 10 May. According to her lawyer, she displayed visible physical signs of abuse upon her arrival in Georgia, though it remains unclear whether she changed her plea as part of the plea deal.

Of course, she has been just lured into smuggling 12 kilograms of marijuana and 2 kilograms of hashish into Georgia by some criminals residing in Thailand?

Stupid girl, 19yo, already wasting her inheritance money

I feel sorry for her father, expat living in Vietnam.

It's obviously a poor parenting story, living with her mother in the UK.

The issue Ihave is tht people with means can pay to get lighter sentences,  So if you are going to smuggle and need an airport to go thrugh use tiblisi if you have a few hnders grand to spare.

As to her I hope they do not lighten her sentence and make her do the 2 years in full maybe she will learn something.

As it is she has simply learnt that if she gets in trouble momy and daddy will bail her out and she has o real responsibilty in the world,

$180,000! So perhaps she'll be making a few more trips so she can pay that back?

Hey, pot & hash, so what?

What about the father not living in the same country?

I'd say it's a good thing.

The mother said she had no money to help her daughter, the father found the money to bail her out.

Waiting for the Go Fund Me to start if not done already to pay that $180k USD.

She'd basically gone off the rails if the media reports of her whereabouts in the run-in to this event are to be believed. Seem to recall dad lives in Vietnam.

Is that included in the initial $180,000 or does it cost extra?

What a wonderful place Georgia is.

"Georgia is a potential candidate for European Union membership, having officially applied in 2022 and been granted candidate status in December 2023."

European Union - no dodgy member states like Switzerland, or Norway allowed... 😆

2 kg was just the hash. There was an additional 12 kg of weed.

So what?!? It's still just smoking dope.

Which isn't allowed in certain countries and then you are an idiot to smuggle it there.

The idiocy is in the laws against substances which cause no harm. If people want it, others will always find a way to get it there.
