Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer

Democrats are showing signs of cracking as pressure mounts to end the weeks-long government shutdown, with key senators now weighing whether to support the Republican stopgap measure that would reopen the government and pay furloughed workers.

Publicly, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and party leaders have vowed not to cave on healthcare demands, insisting President Donald Trump return to the negotiating table. But behind closed doors, frustration is mounting.

“In the conference, nobody wants to be shut down,” one Democratic senator admitted. “We’ve heard from unions and families worried about food assistance running out. This can’t go on.”

The GOP plan — spearheaded by Senator Ron Johnson — would pay all federal employees, including those furloughed, for the 29 days the government has been shuttered. Democrats including Mark Kelly and Tim Kaine say they’ll review the proposal, while Bernie Sanders has pledged to “look at the details” before the November 1 “D-Day,” when SNAP benefits are set to expire for millions of Americans.

Republicans, meanwhile, appear ready to test Democrats’ resolve. Senate GOP leader John Thune told The Hill he may bring Speaker Mike Johnson’s bill to the floor within days, calling it “very possible” that furloughed federal employees will soon be paid.

The standoff has become a political staring contest, with both parties fearing backlash from voters and unions as the shutdown stretches into its second month.

Key Takeaways:

  • Democrats privately consider backing Republican shutdown bill to reopen government.

  • GOP proposal would pay all federal workers, not just essential staff.

  • SNAP benefits run out Nov. 1, piling pressure on lawmakers to act.

Considering that it did not mention the health care funding, yes.

That should not be temporary.
