Chicken Exports Surpass 100 Billion Baht Despite Challenges

Thailand’s chicken export industry has continued its strong performance in 2025, surpassing 100 billion baht in value despite global economic challenges and the ongoing border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. According to Dr. Chaveewan Khampha, President of the Poultry Promotion Association of Thailand under Royal Patronage, the sector has remained resilient thanks to the adaptability of producers and strong international demand.

Dr. Chaveewan revealed on 31 October 2025 that, despite three months of border closures caused by the Thai–Cambodian clashes, exporters managed to maintain supply to existing partners and expand into new markets. This achievement reinforces Thailand’s reputation as the “kitchen of the world,” even though the strong baht has occasionally reduced export revenues.

She noted that while the Thai economy is struggling and many industries are in decline, the poultry sector continues to thrive due to continuous improvements in production systems that meet international standards. These advancements have also benefited domestic grain producers, allowing them to sell crops for safe animal feed compatible with global requirements.

Exporters have diversified by finding new destinations to offset the loss of trade routes to Cambodia. However, Dr. Chaveewan warned that larger markets are increasingly imposing stricter trade conditions. Political instability and frequent changes of prime ministers have made it difficult to secure state-to-state certifications, a key disadvantage for Thailand when negotiating with major trading partners.

The recent border conflict temporarily depressed domestic chicken prices as some exporters were unable to ship goods. Nevertheless, producers avoided serious losses by redirecting sales to neighbouring countries.

A growing concern, Dr. Chaveewan added, is the reduction of orders from major buyers who are now developing their own poultry export industries, intensifying competition. She cautioned that unless the new economic ministers understand the complexities of the sector, future exports could be affected. She also criticised the government for failing to facilitate commercial loans, preventing businesses from expanding and improving their production capabilities.

The association aims to encourage producers to focus on market-driven production and develop products that meet existing demand to prevent losses. Efforts are also underway to explore new opportunities, particularly in the high-value halal market.

Dr. Chaveewan concluded that Thailand’s chicken exports have performed well throughout the year due to improved farming practices, food safety standards, and modern technology that lowers production costs. Despite frequent government changes and tighter international food regulations, the industry continues to thrive, reaching over 100 billion baht in export value for 2025.
