Thailand Seeks Improved Trade Deal from US Amid Talks

Thailand is urging the US for a more favorable trade agreement as the two countries continue discussions on tariffs. This appeal comes after a US-facilitated peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia was signed. Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul directly addressed President Donald Trump during an informal interaction at the APEC summit in South Korea, according to a Thai government statement.

Trump indicated that he would discuss Thailand's request with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, said government spokesman Siripong Angkasakulkiat. The call for a better trade deal is timed with Trump’s recent diplomatic success in Kuala Lumpur, where a Thai-Cambodian “peace” agreement was concluded. Although Thailand refers to it as merely a “declaration” towards normalizing relations, it hopes this will encourage more favorable US trade terms.

Despite a ceasefire, tensions persist with military presence at the Thai-Cambodian border. A joint statement from the White House reveals preliminary agreements to eliminate Thai tariffs on 99% of US goods, particularly industrial, food, and agricultural. Meanwhile, the US will maintain 19% tariffs on Thai products, but some goods may become tariff-free in the future.

Thai Commerce Minister Suphajee Suthumpun noted that ongoing talks are non-binding, aiming for a conclusion by year-end. The Ministry of Finance has revised its economic growth forecast for Thailand from 2.2% to 2.4%, driven by an expected 10% rise in exports this year. However, GDP growth is projected at 2.0% next year as the effects of tariffs emerge.

Foreign tourist arrivals are forecasted to reach 33.5 million this year, below previous estimates. The ministry predicts a recovery to 35.5 million by 2026, still shy of the 2019 peak. Additionally, consumer prices are expected to decline 0.2% this year, with a 0.5% increase forecasted for next year, staying below the target range.

Thailand’s economy faces challenges from US tariffs, household debt, and a strong baht. In response, the government has implemented various stimulus measures, such as a 44 billion baht consumer subsidy to boost economic growth beyond the current projection of 2.2%.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand is seeking improved trade terms with the US amidst ongoing tariff negotiations.
  • A US-brokered peace agreement with Cambodia aims to boost bilateral relations.
  • Economic forecasts have been adjusted, reflecting export growth and challenges from US tariffs.

thats rough, and a good deal of thai tax revenue is luxury import tax

IMHO Thailand will only het the trade deal that Trump wants to give, no matter what concessions to the USA Thailand offers.

And if Thailand doesn't accept Trump's Cambodian "Peace Plan", more and higher tariffs on Thai goods will happen.

They probably heard that tariffs on China were cut by 10 percent. Now Thailand wants the 47%-rate too... 😆

I'm very surprised that China accepted 47%-tariffs, and, on top of that, not only agreed to import huge amounts of soybeans, but also to lift rare earth export restrictions... If China is that desperate, what can Thailand do, or offer?

Nothing

So Trump is claiming he facilitated the peace deal?

It was sickening to see all those present at ASEAN conference all kowtowing to the demented orange man, but they know it’s all part of the game to curry favor. You can’t trust anything he say’s or does because he changes his mind so often. That’s why they call him taco. Just look at his current fall out with Canada, because they aired an advert that upset his man child thin skin.

IMO no improved trade terms until Thailand releases the 18 Cambodian POWs!

Why can’t Thailand trade with other countries and forget about the US completely.

Keyboard Warriors strong on this topic.  China and Asean Free Trade Agreement is okay.

US and Thailand FAIR trade agreement is what?

Anyone who has imported items that pay tax shipped to Thailand knows it needs adjustment.

1.  Taxed on price of item, plus shipping, plus Foreign tax paid.  Not just the value of item.

2. Not protectionism for Thailand to tax imported US goods?

3. Not protectionism for Thailand to have excess tax on imported automobiles from Non Asean Countries?

I'm hopeful both countries will reach a fair trade deal.

I believe I read previously Thailand was keeping taxes minimum on items Needed by Thailand.  (Fuels, oils, machinery, energy equipment, electronic equipment, aircraft parts, and some agricultural foods.)

Not really stuff Foreign consumers would import to fulfill a desire or need.

What do they have to offer in return?
