Dick Cheney, once regarded as America’s most powerful vice president, has died at 84, according to a family statement. Known for his significant role in shaping the “war on terror” and leading the charge into the controversial Iraq War, Cheney’s legacy is a complex mix of influence and controversy. Serving alongside President George W. Bush from 2001–2009, Cheney became a prominent yet polarising figure in American politics.

Cheney’s contributions to US foreign policy, especially following the 9/11 attacks, were profound. He was at the helm during one of the nation’s most difficult periods, endorsing actions like the Afghanistan invasion and advocating the Iraq invasion based on misunderstood weapons intelligence. As the core figure in the "war on terror," Cheney's policies often sparked debate, with critiques of his aggressive stance on interrogation methods and detention policies at Guantanamo Bay.

Despite his significant influence, Cheney's approval ratings dropped, particularly among Democrats, as his tenure concluded with a divisive legacy tied to the lengthy conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. In later years, Cheney found himself at odds with his party, vocally criticising Donald Trump, whom he saw as a significant threat to American democracy. His dissent highlighted the fracture within the Republican Party over traditional conservatism versus Trump’s populism.

Looking forward, Cheney's passing marks the end of an era in American politics defined by his distinct approach to governance and national security. Historians continue to examine his influence on the country's policies and the long-term effects of his decisions. Debate continues to surround Cheney's legacy, especially in relation to striking a balance between national security and civil liberties.

Key Takeaways

  • Dick Cheney, former US vice president and powerful political figure, has died at 84.
  • Known for his role in the "war on terror," Cheney’s policies often sparked intense debate.
  • His later years saw him diverge from Republican norms, criticising Donald Trump strongly.

Dick Cheney is still a war criminal

It is deeply disappointing that Dick Cheney is able to leave his house without being pelted with rotten fruit and vegetables.

Duck hunting will be safer, too!

Never go hunting for Dan Quayle with Cheney:

I will never forget that time when Cheney went hunting for V.P. Dan Quayle, and ended up shooting his best friend in the face.

People should not go hunting unless they really need to eat that for which they hunt.

He was truly the equal of Biden and Trump.

He and GWB bankrupted the country, put it into decades long wars, and then sneaked away to try and hide from it all. Miserable people.

‘Normal ways’??
You do realize he was the driving force behind the Iraq scam war, where millions lost their lives? If you think this is normal, you’re confused.

He was also the vice president with the lowest public opinion in US histor, apart from the one you supported, Kamala.

Cost millions of lives and $7 trillion by his downright lies, rot in hell.

The financial ruin was initiated decades earlier with uncontrolled spending and foolish tax policies. Both Democrats and Republicans were responsible, although the ultimate responsibility rests solely with the US electorate who demanded  benefits and actions without accepting the responsibility of their cost.

If you hate him, I will have to reconsider my opinion of the man and look for his positive qualities.

This will be one interesting funeral. It is customary that the sitting POTUS attend. Will Trump do that? He despised Cheney and his daughter so I expect that he might not. Barring illness, Presidents Bush, Clinton and Obama will because they do the right thing in these matters. Perhaps errand boy Vance will attend. Pence and Quayle will be there. I expect that Biden won't attend because of his chemo.

He helped your brethren in Israel by killing Sadam.

Can you describe this so called “experiment “?

Have someone proof read before posting.

That didn't take long, for the delusional to bring Trump into yet another thread not about him :cheesy:

Did you put on a brown shirt  when you came up with that stupidity?

I do not have brethren in Israel. Mr. Cheney did not kill "Sadam".

He was certainly an oil industry figure who seized the opportunity after 9/11 to expand US imperial reach and support a Zionist foreign policy that benefits from Arab chaos and disunity viewing it as essential to Israeli security. Since World War II, the US has been directly or indirectly responsible for the deaths of millions of people worldwide in pursuit of its hegemony. Like the British before them, who forced opium on China at gunpoint while masquerading as liberators, the US cloaks its imperial ambitions in the language of freedom and democracy. And the plastic patriots spending their debauched dollars in a country built on the back of Southeast Asian genocide are themselves small cogs in the machinery of that injustice. The hypocrisy is nauseating. Pass the sick bag Alice.

A flawed patriot, who devote most of his life to public service ans serving his country.

Vice was a cracking film. 4th Wall ending.

Bush jr, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Rove: they should have all been tried (and convicted) for war crimes.
