Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, accompanied by his wife Thananon Niramit, participated in the traditional Loy Krathong event near Government House. The festivities included Deputy Prime Minister Sophon Saram, Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office Supamas Isaraphakdi, interior ministry official Santi Piyatat, and government spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat. Following a lighthearted moment, Anutin encouraged them to release krathongs, humorously suggesting they "throw the bitterness into the Mekong River."

This event took place at a location previously popularized by former Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, known for interacting with reporters there. Anutin expressed his daily prayers for the country's prosperity, peace, and unity, highlighting his wish for citizens to have financial stability and happiness. When questioned about the significance of his krathong ritual, Anutin emphasized aligning the celebration with royal customs and the importance of preserving Thai traditions.

Reporters noted the quiet atmosphere around Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem, lacking commercial activity. Anutin found the suggestion of integrating it with Phase 2 of the Khon La Khrueng Plus stimulus scheme, which supports small markets, intriguing. He promised to discuss this possibility with the Prime Minister’s Secretary-General to boost local commerce.

Key Takeaways

  • Thai PM Anutin partakes in traditional Loy Krathong festivities.
  • He emphasizes daily prayers over specific festival wishes.
  • PM considers enhancing local commerce around event site.
